Ski has the car. I went the fixer upper route. You don't wanna do it. Trust me. You'll put way more into that thing and still have less of a car than Ski's

^ +1 - speaking from experience, which I am still in the middle of ... (and I thought mine was in reasonably good shape when I bought it).

Yep I agree with DFASTEST and Mtnman, even a good car can appease the fix'er upper very well, as I am about to replace the alternator and install a IceShark kit to see if that fixes by erratic charging system...

Looks like Glacier blue with the dark blue dash... mine is also an 89 and is Alpine white over dark blue FWIW.

How hard is it to find an air bag dash? That is definitely an eyesore.

Here's a way to think about it: If the car is cosmetically in good shape (ie perfect dash and near-perfect interior, sound rear hatch, no rust, exterior in good shape apart from the nose) and has low miles, you will feel less bad about pouring $ into what has the potential to be a pretty good example of an 89 951. If it is rusty or not cosmetically and structurally in good shape, forget it.

In my view you basically "buy" a 951 over time. You are very unlikely to avoid putting some $thousands into any 951. Ski's might be a rare exception. These are old cars and the parts for the 89s are scarce. The purchase price is only a fraction of the cost of entry.

This is a risky car; you are very likely to get hit with the big cost fixes. However, you have that risk at some level with nearly any 951, and there are not many 89s with 80k out there. If you get it cheap enough, have the resources to do what needs to be done, and have realistic expectations, it might not be a bad choice.

Also, don't think of it as an investment. You will spend more than it is worth in resale. It's still a bargain though compared to other cars with remotely comparable performance, eye appeal, and cachet.

EASY there, fella...

in nice shape, a blue dash can be pretty; -I'm not sure I don't feel a bit slighted by the 'eyesore' comment...

Lets sumarise this then.

The best I can get the car for is $4350.00

The car is better than I thought cosmetically from looking at the pics. very straight paint is good not a bunch of dings other than the nose damage.

Interior is also good but the dash is in bad shape. I know you can't see it in the pics but trust me it's not good.

The car starts right up idles good with no lifter or rod noise.
But overheats very quickly and isn't making much boost.

My attraction to the car was that it is an 89 model with the obvious sought after options and it really does seem like a car that is worth saving. But everyone is telling me to run as fast as I can. I would like to see how many of you guys would pass it up if you found it sitting in a barn?

Yet it is a tough call.

I was referring to the condition of the dash on the car I am looking at. It's cracked badly and I imagine they are not easy to come by or cheap to fix.

I wouldn't pass it up, but I do all my own work and don't mind projects. Depending on how much you will be able to put into it is a big factor. Your time is also a factor as I doubt you want to buy it just to have it in pieces for months waiting for money, parts, time, etc...

Believe me, the dash is one of those things you see every minute you drive the car. No matter how the rest of the car is, that will drive you nuts. New ones are NLA, but there are sources for replacements or rebuilds, and procedures for removal and replacement around, and probably a few listers who have done it. Again, if you are ok figuring the cost to fix into the purchase price, it may not be a deal killer.

Well it looks like this isn't going to happen regardless. The seller can't come up with a title. I told him it's a parts car at this point.

May not even be a parts car in that case... maybe just a fast-track to felony - "recieving stolen goods in execss of ?"
