Default 6 speed conversion

did the search thing and didnt find too much so some help would be good. I have an 1987 944 turbo and i found a 6 speed tranny, my question is whats involved in the swap?? From what i know the tranny fits in perfectly the only thing is that the speedo is a no go. You have to get a 968 abs module and a g16 relay but then what do you do??? Any write ups around or any pros who can give me some guidance??? BTW my car does have ABS

You copy the 968 wiring diagram, the relay can be put up in the dash, you swap the abs modules.I'm not a pro but I have had it done, it is quite straightforward.

I recall reading you will need one 968 axle as well. Is a different length on one side than the 951 axle.

I have a 968 6-speed LSD in my 86 951. The work was done by a local mechanic. The most difficult part was the speedometer. It required a bit of fabrication. For some reason, the speedo is only accurate below 80 mph.

I'm also interested in what 968 hardware is required for this job ....

You need 968 transaxle, 968 complete transaxle mount, the shorter axle, the shift rod and shifter mechanism w/ boot. The speedometer is up to you, there is several ways to do it!

Most Audi versions of 01E transmissions has a similar speedo pickup like original 951 transmission has. These parts can be installed into 968 trans as well, so no hassle with ABS etc. Audi used same basic trans at least in A8 & A6 models. Might be little bit difficult to find these Audi units in the states because most of your cars are automatics. It's totally different story in europe.

Default I'm interested in this too

I'd love a 6 speed, but is the 968 transmission as durable, more durable or less durable than an '87 951 non-lsd, non-oil-cooler tranny.

It is at least as durable as a 951 tranny. Some 6-speeds were made with a factory faulty pinion bearing (too tight) which can grenade itself, but it will make lots of noise to warn you before. And most of them have been fixed by now.

Does anyone with a 6-speed 951 experience any rattling or noises after the conversion? I've been told the 6-speed doesn't like single-mass flywheels and I want more data on that.

Its not the transmission that is causing this vibration or rattling its the particular cars setup! If you install a single mass lightweight flywheel in a engine that was designed to have a 25lb heavier flywheel that uses harmonic dampening then of course your going to have mismatched components and thus some sort of after-affects!

The 968 transaxle is based on a G50 design and uses most of the same parts, these transaxles are far superior to the earlier Audi 5 speed design found in the 944 line!

I have a 6-speed LSD, aluminum flywheel, lightened and knife edged crank. The powertrain is very smooth with no more vibration than stock.

no harmonic dampening device came with our cars. So.. lighter equipment shouldn't change a thing. un-balanced equipment on the other hand...

Are you sure about this? I thought it was based on Audi A6/A8 01E series trans (Audi 6 speed design). If i remember correctly this trans is fabricated by Getrag and G50 series is Porsche's own. I suppose 931 trans is the only ½ engine models trans based on G50. I might be wrong.

Well I'm pretty certain that you can interchange gearsets between the 931 and G50. One of the reasons that the Hybrid guys like the 931 tranny in their conversions.
