Default Torque Tube Bearings

I got the clutch out and found that I need to rebuild the torque tube in the 86 Turbo. I looked around on Clark's Garage and did some searching about here, but, found that several different part numbers were listed for the bearings and it has made me a little confused as to which are the correct/best bearings to use.

So, what are the bearings that I should be using? Should I be looking for any special characteristics, like heat resistance, tolerances, etc? Would I be able to get them locally or are they going to be a special order?

Thanks!
Jason

Those are very common, inexpensive bearings. I need to do a TT rebuild on mine and have gotten some parts together for this. Do a search of this forum.

I bought mine through VBX bearings and split order with someone for $40 for 10 bearings.

Someone had a group buy last year on the bushings that went between the bearings and the shaft. I got those just in case for $60 I think.

Just completed my second, it's a simple job to replace the bearings, the hard part is removing and dismanteling the TT. Clarks write up is good, it helps if you have a press to get those bearings and sleeves back in. If the sleeves are damaged get a machine shop to make you some out of delrin according to Clarks measurements. Though if you are careful removing them from the bearings you can reuse them. You have to unstake and press them out, then press them into the new bearings and re-stake.

Those bearings are not so common as the tolerance is C5 while most people use the easily available C3 bearings.

Ok, so it looks like the ones to get are VXB's 6006ZZ (Inner Diameter: 30mm, Outer Diameter: 55mm, Width: 13mm, 16000 RPM max rotation). Clark's Garage has both the *** 6006-2Z (equivalent to 6006ZZ in size, but, only 13000 RPM), and *** 6006-2RS (*** actually lists 6006-2RSR, equivalent size, 8500 RPM).

Thom, you say to get the C5 tolerance. If I understand it correctly, this is to allow for reduced wear on the bearing due to thermal expansion?

It seems that there are various ones fitted to the cars. I had C4 & C5, hear some 928's came with C3's. I don't think this really matters as the temperature in the TT is not high enough to effect tollerance operation.

I fitted C3's as they were easier to get at the time, this was two years ago and no issues. Fitted C3's again in my second car. Get either 6006ZZ or 60062RS, C3 or higher tollerance. The "ZZ" & "2RS" refers to the type of seal used, again, not an issue inside the TT.

As for the sleeves, I don't know if the JegEng ones are delrin, but I don't think it matters as the original ones were plastic coated and they lasted 20+ years in both the cars.

I'm not suggesting anything.
I used C5 as this is what I found when I took the TT apart.

JagEng bushings are delrin, I used them when I rebuilt my TT.

Well, it seems that C4 or C5 is really hard to find (unless I want to wait months for them to arrive--which I don't :-) ).

It makes sense to use the higher tolerance because the torque tube is right next to the exhaust and the driveshaft will have to contend with any vibrations from the transmission, et cetera, but, I may have to go C3 because of availability. Has anyone else used the C3 for any extended period of time? I'd like to assuage my fears as much as possible! ;-)

Does anyone know if the 968 TT uses the same bearings and bushings?
