I'm sure someone will correct me but the C# is the clearance (tolerance) of the bearings in relation to the cage with heat expansion worked into the equation. The original C5 is loose by todays standards and is fine for lower rpm use in a TT. C5 is no longer available. C3 is pretty much the standard now for general use and is rated at higher rpms and temps than the original C5 bearing spec. The C3 used for TT bearings don't exceed a sustained 7K rpm and are rated for 16K leaving a pretty good hedge against overheating. I searched for months and could not even find C4 without a special order in the 6006 ZZ and Krytox hi-temp grease. The C5 is one of those things that time has worked against as manufacturing gets better. The US made C3 VBX bearings I bought in C3 are light years better in quality than the SKF wheel bearings made in Mexico I bought two years ago and yet my wheels haven't fallen off the car yet.

So, for those of us running plenty of extra power, which ones are "top shelf" so to speak? Anything higher performance than contemporary C3's?

This post might be helpful:

https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...-carriers.html

Worth noting:
-Soft aluminum inserts are available on ebay (most people seem to agree the aluminum is comparable to delrin, but it can be staked on to the bearing which is nice).
-Bearings can be had with the inserts instead of a bulk buy.
-"Constantine" on the board is adapting his super heavy-duty 928 bearings to the 944 torque tube...coming soon! (like...a month or two)
