Building a Turbo Cup replica (sort of) - need mirrors, fuchs, +
Hi everybody, its been a while since I last posted - nice to see some familiar faces still here. I notice that there have also been a lot of great posts with tons of information - some of it directed to cup cars.
I'm writing because I need some help on a cup replica I'm building. First off, this is not my first 951 - I have been down the "too many mods" road too many times before with these cars. This time, I got lucky and found a nice non-sunroof '86 turbo without alarm or cruise. And fortunately it came from a fellow lister who knew what he was doing. I have decided to "limit" the modifications to a focused objective - a replica cup car. The car started off with some options also - a 2.8L sleeved block, Vitesse turbo, MAF, Koni yellows, Momo wheel, sport seats, etc.
First, are there any more of the original cup car mirrors still out there? I know the new cup-style mirrors look better, but I am trying to stay original. I think the VW cab-type mirrors are identical except for the bases and the bases seem to be unique to the 944 (and different from the power versions).
As for the wheels, I found some 9" Fuchs for the rear and still need some 8" 951 wheels for the front. Anybody have a set? Condition is not really important as I will have them refinished.
As for tires, what are you guys with 8/9s running? I think factory was 245/255 but the Tirerack only carries the 225/245 combo. I guess I'll try that to start with - the selection is still pretty bad though! as for the wheels/tires, I thought I'd post an interesting tidbit from my car:
Weight for Cup 3's (MM) with S-03s 225/255:
Front - 50 lbs x 2 - 100 lbs
Rear - 57 lbs x 2 - 114 lbs
Total - 214 lbs
Projected weight for 8/9 Fuchs with 225/245 yoks
Front ~ 39 lbs x 2 - 78 lbs
Rear ~ 41 lbs x 2 - 82 lbs
Total - 160 lbs (THESE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN REFINED LATER IN THE THREAD)
Total of 44 lbs* (see below - actually 51lbs) of rolling weight is a big difference!
As I go through the process (slowly probably), hopefully I'll detail the results. This is how the car started...

Any news on your cup project sounds like your going to have a clean car when done! I know I have had a set of those 477 part # Audi black plastic cup mirrors on order for 3 months now. The factory says they are still available so I wait and keep checking in! I know the early '86 cup cars have some interesting things as Porsche did not really have a perfect build list for those cars so they all had some subtle changes. I have seen a couple original '86 cup cars that had early sport seats, they all had manual roll up windows, they had a rear KONI sport shock with a fixed barrell type helper spring similar to the 968 M030 setup which is still available!

When I ordered my turbo cup mirrors this past fall/winter I was told it was the last complete set at the factory. I am going with a similar cup car look on my alpine white sunroof delete 951.

Depending on how far you want to go with this, here are some other parts for a Cup conversion that you can search for.
Some of the manual/non-power option stuff is/was still available from porsche - but the motorsport performance parts: suspension bits/bushings, mag. parts & wheels, DME/KLRs, trans synchros and LSDs, etc... are long gone.

From PET, it should be 951 603 115 02, for the non-M573 (AC option).
I got that one from Porsche, so Im sure I just looked up the part number in PET at the time I ordered it (maybe 2 years ago).

Wow - that is some great information. Those pictures are really cool - thanks! As for my ride, I got it running again which is a plus. Runs great at only 12 psi with the big turbo and big bore. I am in the process of turning the engine compartment back into stock appearance to pass smog and to look somewhat authentic (except of course for the mg intake shown above).
While I am still going the turbo cup direction, I am morphing it somewhat into a period-modified car. This would include modifications such as clear fixed headlights (from the 924GT era), lexan hatch (well maybe not period - but who could tell?), dual (rather than single) Pole Positions, retaining AC, etc. Right now I am still on the Fuchs phase, but will post again when I have them all refinished and set up with tires. I think the real goal is to have this car look like it could have come from 1986 but have amazing capabilities - being light (2600lbs wet) and having somewhere around 400 lb at the crank. Like I said, its probably going to be a long road to achieve these type of goals, but it beats car payments.

manual windows
I have some manual window winders with all the hardware to install into any 944, I have door panels too but they are 2 tone brown, and only 1 black door panel to go with these so if anyone wants the winders and stuff to make factory roll up windows and save more than 10 LBS let me know.
I am asking $150 for the setup and I have a sunroof delete 944 I installed this same equipment in. It takes about 1 hour and is really lightweight , and very cool!
