Don't compare a new n/a honda to a 20 year old boosted Porsche. Last I checked, japanese turbo cars like the 300zx or supra are very unreliable, and not easy to work on. I don't know much more than that but I imagine even if the parts are cheaper, the net cost of ownership is similar to or more than that of a 951.

I have never owned a more reliable car than the 968. Even my old mercedes diesel has been less reliable than the 968. It's the definition of reliable.
My '95 has 178k on it, original clutch, motor, tranny (rebuilt pinion bearing).
My '93 has 226k on it, original bottom end and tranny (head rebuilt 4k ago, was not necessary).
My only experience with a 951, is that I spent a summer getting paid by a friend to fix his 951. While I spent the summer driving my 968. If you're looking to buy a car because your other car broke down, then buying a turbo doesn't make much sense, eh? Just sayin'.

Thank you for some good feedback.... I know it isn't fair comparing the Porsche to a newer car... but it is easy to make that mistake.
I seem to get a very mixed bag... one side says the running cost of a 951 is extreme the other says it's a very solid and reliable car...
Well I am good and confused.... I will be calling a local Porsche tech to see what he has to say as well.
Thanks a ton guys I appreciate input and tolerance.

Stock to stock, these cars are damned near bullet proof. Once you mod them... ALL bets are off!

Burning Brakes
just factor in some basic 944 problems such as steering rack, ball joints/caster bushings, fuel lines over exhaust mani, timing belt and the evil oil pan gasket. as the cars get older make sure the tranny is solid with NO synchro or shifting problems. and check for a decent clutch as that's a big expensive job but i've got 100k miles on my clutch and still going and that includes a little track time as well as living in stop & go LA traffic.
and of course, as with any 20 year old car, all bets are off! see, you get the whole spectrum of life with one great to drive car. what more could you want?

Race Car
The cost of maintaining a Porsche is something I will never understand... Why can Japan make a performance car that is 9/10 and in some cases 11/10 a Porsche's performance, that requires $0.0 in running costs.... and will last as long if not longer... (see 200-300K Subarus).
This for me is a source of frustration. $2000 a year is the kind of thing I am concerned with. I want a Porsche, a 911 is the real dream. I just wanted to see if in my current situation a Porsche makes sense. From what I can tell it may not.

Simply put, Porsche is not for you........yet.

Two words: galvanized body... One big difference I've noticed between the japanese cars I've owned and the Porsche is that the body on the Porsche seems like it was built to last forever. For me personally, I have a hard time investing money and time improving a vehicle that is not going to last a long time without rusting or falling apart. Picture the typical 80's Rx7 or Z car compared to the typical 951.
That said, one japanese sports car that I consider to be in the league of a Porsche in build quality and performance is the NSX... would like to have one someday, but I bet they aren't going to get any cheaper as they age at this point.

Here is a copy of a car that is for sale. This was owned for two years and was obviously very will taken care of. This is more than typical in terms of cost of ownership for a fairly stock car, but thought this would give you some insight. This would be a great car for you. Look at the post on the list and pick this one up. You should get by for many years with just routine stuff.
At 38,000 miles I spent $8,500 in maintenance to the car. Replaced were:
Timing belt and Water Pump.
Brand New A/C system w/ new compressor and dryer.
New Clutch Master cylinder
All 4 rotors replaced w/ new pads.
All 4 Calipers totally rebuilt and clearcoated red.
New coolant hoses
All front engine seals and pulleys replaced.
New Koni Yellows in back.
New Fuel Filter.
New OEM Bosch Fuel injectors
All receipts from Munks Motor's.
Oil changed every 2500 miles w/ Valvoline VR racing 20w50
