I use mine exactly the same way you do. It supplements everything else I do while driving. The local Staties here have gotten their hands on Lidar and the V1 is just stellar in detecting it.

I was playing with a CLK on the way back from Charlotte and we had been running 110 or so for 30 miles and my V1 started an alert Ka ahead and then off(instant on) so I let the Merc lead by an 8th of a mile or so and sure enough we crested a hill only to see a Silver Crown Vic in the emergency Lane. Game over for the CLK.

It actually works out pretty well if you use it that way. I absolutely HATE to say this, but I have not gotten pulled over for speeding in a WHILE

Knocking on a massive piece of wood right now!

The V1 might detect it, but when it goes off, you just got hit, and you're gonna get a ticket.
The other thing is the "instant on". The cop just has to watch for you to come into range, and you're done. Sometimes, you can pick it up bouncing off other cars, but it's much harder to get enough warning.
And therein lies the flaws with radar detectors. Don't get me wrong, I've got one too, but they're far from ideal.
It's a war out there, people.

TurboTommy, you are adventurous.... The OPP does not like detectors and I hope that yours is hidden Not sure what the penalty is, but I do seem to recall it being steep given that detectors are illegal here... PM me to tell me how you manage it.
