Question Torque Tube Bearing Carrier

Can someone send me a good carrier?
The bearing in my #1 carrier spun causing the new bearing to be loose once installed.
Pics of the culprit…

With all the cars being parted out here, where are all the torque tubes going?
I only need one carrier

I haven't ever taken the torque tubes apart - usually just recycle them with the car. How hard is it to pull out the carrier?

Thanks for replying Josh… figured that was the case.
I’m following Clarks, http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-05.htm , and after a trip to Home Depot, I find the process some what slow but not too difficult.
After all is complete I’ll have about $350 in parts and tools, totally worth the effort for a smooth, quiet drive line.

Are you sure you need a new carrier, could just be the bearing was so worn that the slight movement of the shaft caused it to spin in the carrier. If you fit new bearings and sleeves it should tighten back up.

I am doing my second TT right now, I didn't need the threaded rod to remove the bearings, they just came right out with the shaft - result!

Pipe & rod $60, delrin bushes $80 (local machine shop), bearings $40 = $180

+ lots of labor. This is definately a job to do yourself as the parts are cheap but the shop labor would set you back 10hrs+

Mike,
Do you think the TT job is possible 'on the car' if the transaxle and engine are out or is the front clearance for the pipe a problem? I'm all set to go with parts and tools but don't look forward to having to drop the rear subframe to get the TT out. The engine is already out so dropping the trans is nothing.

Thanks

TT is not something I would like to attempt on the car, if it is possible. It requires a lot of bashing to get the shaft and bearings out. I used 6ft x 1/2in plumbing pipe (as per clarkes), I don't think you would have the room as you have to bash it from the flywheel end. The rear subframe is not that hard to drop, you don't have to remove it, just dropped enough to slide the TT out.

Unfortunately Mike, the new bearing was loose in the carrier.

Where did you get four bearings for $40? Mine were about $17 each.
I was able to reuse the sleeves, but am having Delrin pieces made for $18 each.

Steve, Looks like you’d have a hard time lining the pipe up from the front. Then you’d be driving the shaft out into the spare tire well.

Thanks guys, those pics do tell it all, no clearance to pull the shaft. I ended up buying the 10 pak of the VBX brand 6006 ZZ bearings for $40 and split them with another rennlister. They say 'USA' but are C3 tolerance. Finding the C4 is next to impossible and several people here have been using C3's with no issues. I also have the delrin bushings from Jon Moeller's supplier.

Jason, got the bearings from VXB $10 each inc shipping. They are C3 clearance but they have been on my daily driver for the last 18 months and are as smooth as silk.

Default Rebuilding T.T. Bearings

I'm in the process of rebuilding my torque tube, and just my luck, I have the "old style" bearing carriers. So I drilled out the rivets, and separated the two halves, and installed my new bearings.

Now my question is how do I secure the two carrier halves? There sure doesn't seem to be enough space to fit regular rivets in there.

Do I need to weld these two halves to keep them secure?

Ok, I guess I need to go shopping for tinny bolts. Thanks Sean
