Probably this has been covered before but I am new to this Forum. I own a 1986 951 since new and have time-trialed it since I bought it but in fairly stock classes. Following normal progression for most all 951s, this one is now a dedicated race car but front and rear fenders are still stock even if the fronts have been "rolled" to provide more space for the tires. I am looking at moving to a higher class with more modifications allowed, including wider tires. My question is:

What are the widest tires you can fit in the front and the rear of a stock-fendered 1986 951? I plan on using Hoosier R-6s on 17" rims custom-made to fit the unique 1986 offsets and have -3.2 negative camber at the front and -2.7 at the rear, which should add clearance.

From what I have seen or heard Hoosier 275-40/17s will fit both at the front and at the rear of the car but will Hoosier 295-35/17 tires fit at the rear? Has anybody tried it that can shed some light into this?

The 295's will fit in the rear but the spacing needs to be dead nuts and you don't have a lot of room for camber changes or variation. With -2.7 will be okay on the outside but it's likely to rub on the inside. I have 275's on my 86 with 18" CCW's and -2.0 camber and had to use a 5mm sandwich spacer so I didn't rub under suspension compression.

Thank you Jeremy. Presume you also have stock fenders. You say your 275/18 tires rubbed under compression. Front and / or rear? 275-40/17 Hoosiers are 25.2" inches in diameter, precisely the same as your presumably 275-35/18. Could it then be that the 275s will also rub? Did the spacer correct the problem?

295's in the rear max

335's in the rear if you get aggressive with a fender roller and have a PERFECT offset. You'll also need to grind away a small bit of metal on the inner fender well.

Of course, that's all depending on brand.

Hoosiers are FAT. def bigger than a corresponding size street tire.

295's will require spacers and may require fender rolling. I had to roll both fenders and clearance a little space on the inside of the passenger side. Any camber changes and I'll need more clearance on the inside of each.

295's will fit without any modifications if you have the correct offset rim.

315's require a little fender rolling (ok... aggressive fender rolling) and the correct offset rim.

Spacers and longer studs can make up for the incorrect offset.

That's funny, my 295's rubbed on the inside and outside on the passenger side. I had to clearance some space on the inside and roll the fender. How would a different offset change that??? If both the inside AND outside of the tire are rubbing, changing the offset won't do anything other than move the rub more to the inside or outside. Something's gonna rub. Are you running 10.5's or 11's. That might change the issues involved.

Not all 295's are the same width (even though they should be). And.... not all 944's are the same (heck... they aren't the same side to side on the same car...)

Offset, camber, tire width, rim width will affect fitment.

With a 295, I run the 11" wheel with <2 degrees negative camber (minimum).

All R-spec rubber is wider than the label suggests. Street tyres are closer to the mark. Then you've got suspension, travel, height, camber, how much pizza you eat etc to allow for.

Mine are just old Yoko AVS on 10" Speedlines.
True...Hoosiers are always much wider.
