I can't believe he painted his VW in his garage in canada during the winter when it was -25 degress celsius outside with only a portable heater!! This may just be a winter project for me. The paint on his VW is going on 6 years now and 35k miles and looks awesome.

I used the regular Rustoleum line, not the pro or industrial. What you see is after three coats. He recommends six but I don't have the patience to do six coats and the way it looks, four is going to be just fine. It took a lot of playing around with to get it right. He says to use enough mineral spirits to make it a tad thicker than water. I found that I had to make it about the consistency of whole milk to get a good even spread with my roller and minimize bubbling. It is amazing to watch it self level. I basically roll a coat on and wait about 3-4 minutes, then roll back over it with just the weight of the roller to even it out. Plus, I'm using a little turbo fan to help the paint dry a little bit quicker so I can work faster. I started this on Monday and I'll be done by tomorrow. Not bad for only working on it about 3 hours a night.

This makes me feel a lot better seeing the results you had. WOW!!
Thanks! I'm gonna swear by Bondo and Rustoleum from now on. I've seen professional paint jobs that don't anywhere near what this does but it's time to get back to work. I'll post some closeups soon!

Thanks John. Blue is my favorite color and I've always wanted a blue car. Rustoleum has some good color choices out there.

Did you have to use a brush for areas like the vents at the lower parts of the front end?

+1

I'm going to do this to my beater Volvo, any more tips are welcome.

My Volvo is white, I want to paint it black, should I expect any trouble getting it to cover the original color after 3 - 6 coats? It looks like you covered a dark color with a lighter one, which I image would be more difficult.

Yep. I got the el cheapo .49 foam brushes for those which gives you mixed results. I couldn't find a high density foam brush so thats all I could use. It spreads the paint thinly which means you have to give it a few more coats then using a roller. It still works out though.

The car looked like that after two coats and thats blue over black. I also did ZERO prep work, minus washing the car with dish soap to get any old wax off, of course. The hood was already in primer but if you have any fiberglass parts, like my nose panel and bumper, Rustoleum will stick to it like **** on fur. It almost looks like you could finish it after one coat, its that good.

Hey, the car looks great so far. Can't wait to see finished photos. I am probably going to roller my E30 BMW in a few weeks. I tested the paint out on an old fender and it really does seem to work! I got a Porter Cable buffer with all the random pads it its amazing how well the process works. The painted surface buffs smooth and shiny.

I've been working up the nerve to go ahead, it takes courage to jump in with both feet and start painting your car with a relatively new technique. Cheers to you!

When you have no money, its not hard to try something to make what you have look better than it does lol. I read that whole thread before I decided to go through with it. It turned out to be a whole hell of a lot cheaper than a basic MAACO paint job and looks a lot better than what they'd be able to accomplish. I'm trying to hunt down an orbital buffer now so I can put da polish on.
