Default LIGHT WEIGHT BATTERY FOR 951'S

Would anyone recommend a lighter battery then the regular Interstates or universal number 48/91-6YR. Looking to save some weight and replace my existing
battery. What about OPTIMA red top dry cells. Any experience with this?

Cheers

The Miata had a super light weight AGM (Absorption Glass Mat) type battery like the Optima. Mine lasted over 5 years. Replacements are about $80 shipped to your house.

Regular size. I wouldn't mind saving a few pounds. I mainly need a good reliable
12v battery.

I use an odyssey battery that weighs 18# or so,
http://www.batteryweb.com/odyssey-de...otorcycles.htm

if you don't want to use a battery tender then this will do better (but weighs 26#):

rennline sells a mount for it or you can fab something up

here's a link to the rennline page:

I would have to second the odyssey battery, I've seen it used in a turbo 325i for over a year going strong. It was quite simple to adapt.

One of my projects this winter has been installing an Odyessy light weight battery.
Bath room scale reads 36#'s vs. 18#'s. I started with the battery and a Lindsey mount then fabricated a bent plate and plywood platform to fit the factory mount.

As mentioned, if you want ultra light, go with the PC680. I have used it in both my n/a and 951. I always took it out in my n/a for winter and put the stock battery back in (my daily driver). With my 951 i have been running it year round through NYC winters. It does crank a bit slow when its very cold out on a completley cold engine, but has not failed to start the car ever. If you do plan to run one of these year round, even in winter, there are two very important things to keep on top of. One, you must make sure your electrical system is working correctly, mainly that you have no abnormal drains on the battery when the car is shut off. Also you must run a lower weight oil in the winter (10w40 for example). I used 20w50 up through Janurary and the car cranked incredibly slow and barely started once. 10w40 it still cranks a bit slow on those ultra cold days..but has not been a problem yet.

Thanks. I drive it 1500k a year summer use only. Thats why so little millage (34k Canadian car) A light battery that does not need any mods would be great! I think it's to much to ask since the battery case is reduced and brackets are required. The battery you are referring to is a pc680. Any links for stores to buy? Is there O.E size dry cell available that the stock hold down works? The optima link does not list 944 turbo cars.

Regards,

Rennline sells both the PC680 and a pretty nice bracket to make it secure in the factory battery location. The PC680 only weighs about 15lbs and was around 25lbs lighter than my original Duralast.

You can find the battery and a specially made bracket which will allow mounting the battery directly to the factory location at Rennline. You can probably find it cheaper if you shop around, my local friend has a dealer account and was able to get the PC680MJ for $95 shipped.

I run an Odyssey 545MJ in my race car...I think it weighs 13 pounds and it works great. I've never had an issue with it and it starts my car fine even after sitting in the trailer for 5 weeks.

That is slick...well done!

edit: This is what I use http://www.batterywarehouseco.com/ca...oducts_id=1847
It costs $50 less than the Odyssey PC680, has only 20 fewer CCA, and is 4 pounds lighter.
