Default Just picked her up from the import office

Just picked up my '86 from the Vehicle Processing Center this last tuesday. I'm really excited; although it appears that I have some work ahead of me.

The option codes indicate 220; which means I have LSD . The sports seats are really comfortable, and are a marked improvement from the regular seats that I had in my 83 NA a few years ago. It's really tight, handles well, and is well alligned.

When I step on it a bit, the boost guage reads about 1.1 bar. I remember reading somewhere that stock on the '86 is supposed to max out at .75 or something? If it's topping at 1.1 does that indicate that there are aftermarket chips installed?

I haven't completely opened her up yet, I'm taking her down to the Porsche mechanic to change the T-belt, H2O pump, and front seals this weekend, and to give it the professional eye that I lack.

The power steering system is leaking pretty badly, the reserviore was empty, and the PO had left a bottle of regular PS fluid in the back wheel well indicating it's been serviced incorrectly for some time. I put it up on a lift today and cut the PS belt. I don't want to damage components any more than they already are; and I'm going to let the porsche mech look at it before I get it running again. So for now, it's extra PT on my drive to and from work.

I'm also getting a weird low-pitch whining noise that sounds like a bearing or a belt coming from the front of the car. I was hoping it was the PS Pump; but it wasn't. Hopefully the mechanic can isolate the noise.

Even though there are a couple issues, i'm excited about this car and can't wait to get it back into tip-top shape.

If you are talking about the stock gauge in the dash cluster, then 1.1 is low. The factory gauge should read about 1.75. The stock boost gauge is in absolute pressure, and factory boost is about ~11psi +- over atmosphere.

Its hard to determine your noise from the description provided, but it almost sounds like it could be as simple as an over tightened balance shaft belt

Good luck!

if on the stock boost gauge its only reading 1.1 bar there is a problem. If your saying it goes over "2 bar" when looking at the gauge that means it probably has a chip in it. Squeal could be a lot of things, belt, a/c, or engine problems. Your mechanic should be able to find it.

Gl with the car! congrats!

So if it's only reading 1.1 then there are serious boost issues, or an errant guage. Hmm, I hope i didn't bite off more than i wanted to chew with this car.

Well, no sense in worrying about it. I'll just see what my mechanic says.

If it reads in the 1.1 to 1.2 range you are in safety mode – could be as simple as a bad TPS or a loose wire. Usually nothing really bad!
You are in for a treat once you get that fixed!

HO HO HE HE HA HA ! ! !

In a year or so when your debating over the Escort Cup or some other suspension or which larger turbo and whether to go with the 55 LB or 72lb injectors I will remind you of this post...

Watch the taxi cabs over there, but you know that.

Well, I suppose I might as well put my inexperience with turbo'd motors on display here for all to see Apparently my boost problem was caused by a loose connection between the 930 steering wheel and the driver side sports seat. Or more specifically, the neuron in my head that tells my foot to move in a downward trajectory, causing more pressure to be applied to the accelerator. Once I fixed that problem, it appeared that my car was boosting at healthy levels under load, with the needle topping out one tick shy of the 2 bar line.

So, it's off to Osan to have the Porsche mechanic do my seals, tbelt, water pump stuff for 300,000 KRW (i.e. 330 USD).

Thanks for the encouragement.

More stupid questions to follow. (But don't worry, I know how to use the search function).

1.1 Is limp mode.

Youre not getting full boost. Youre probably getting ~4 Psi of boost.

Thats funny, when I drove mine for the first time (after doing belts/seals etc.) I was so disappointed with the lack of power (in 1st)after everything I'd heard -I called my Dad to whine about it. I was pretty much babying it because I was nervous about my belt job, so my Dad tells me quit being a ***** and drive it like I stole it. Thats when I found out the turbo needs a bit of pedal to wake up...that was quite a few smiles and quite a few $$$ ago. Congrats and enjoy.
