Not really, imagine a non english speaking person comes to the US, big duh he or she would need to learn english in order to stay.

So I know this is not quite on topic but is somewhat related.

Anyone here from Austria? I have lived in Germany when I was much younger but now have a possible opportunity to live in Austria. I am flying Monday to Austria (actually munich) for a job interview.

So how much difference is there in living in Austria than Germany? I lived in the Ruhrgebiet. The portion of Austria that I would be going to is Innsbruck. I have heard that Austria is a little less "stiff" and Autrians are "slower".

Now, I would love to have my 951 in Europe (and my Hayabusa) but I think that it would be an uphill battle getting the 951 in. It is probably not even close to TUV legal.

I have been told that if I take the job, I will probably get a crappy car. I was told that I will probably have something like an A6 or similar.

So, i will need 2 cars...one will be a company car...maybe I can get a porsche for a 2nd car?

DanaT: I know that running costs in Austria is generally cheaper than Germany. In Passau, we are 2kms from the boarder with Austria, i drove through into Austria to fill up the car with petrol. In Passau, the petrol (98 RON) goes for anywhere between 1.39-1.45/Liter Euros, in Austria i managed to find 98 RON for 1.10-1.15 Euros/Liter.

I just came back to Dubai, staying for a couple of weeks or so, then heading back to Passau

In Passau, Shell V-Power (100 RON) goes for 1.52 Euros/Liter at times.

Dubai is still the same, 1.25 euros/GALLON (3.98liters) for 98 RON

+1. i was in southern austria (graz) for 4 months a couple of years ago and it was really nice. i went up north to salzburg and to munich a couple of times, the roads and scenery up there are fantastic. and the people are really nice, very helpful, and don't care if your german is not that good (or non-existent).

watch yourself on the autobahn's though, sometimes the locals have trouble staying within their lane - i found it quite amusing. here in oz, if you even touch the line someone will beep you to let you know. these guys were 3/4 of the way into the next lane without noticing, all the time.

I am (was) an engineer for active implantable medical devices. I have moved onto management (bad move) and there are device companies that are in europe. Basically, I have co-developed some technology that others want to also copy. Easiest way to do it is hire someone who has done it.

Yes, wife and kid are in the picture. Basically, my daughter 3 and it is a good time to learn another lanuage. My wife knows about 10 words of German so she will have a hard time. I will do fine. My german is good enough to get around (ok...so i must state that I have instructed surgeons on how to perform a surgery in german and also have done troubleshooting with patients in german...i would rate my german somewhere between acceptable and fluent..in fact I have been told in germany that they dont believe i am american because americans dont speak german).

Driving doesnt bother me. I just hate the "Nur Links" plates on the autobahns. In fact, any yellow plate is bad news..... the germans will know about the "Nur Links" license plates....

If you ship a car from outside the European Union, you can importe it duty free and register it without additional homologation as long as you can provide proof of change of residence.

Shipping roll-on/roll-off from the U.S. should cost around US$2K and takes around 20 days into a major northern EU port, like Bremerhaven near Hamburg, Germany. Shipping in a container costs under US$1K but will take at least a month.

I imported my U.S. spec 944S2 cab this way and the only requirement is that the car passes Tüv inspection. With a U.S. spec 944 all you need to do is reroute the front parking light wires down to a pair of white bulb holders in the blanks in the foglight assemblies and you're good to go.

Then again, depending on what you can get for your 951 in the States, you may want to consider selling it and buying an EU 951 when you get settled in Austria.
