Olli - Is it really nessassary to use the guide plates other than to prevent brake squeal?

When I purchased my car it never had them fitted and still to this day when I uprated the brakes I'm not usint them.

Any ideas?
i see more on the fronts.

From my experience with a stuck calpier (on my dads chevy silverado), it made a screeching sound at any speed and the rotor was VERY inconsistently worn (about a 1" strip was actually being used), the rest was rough and the pads were grooved the same way. My rotors are fine, so as to not indicate a stuck caliper, or am I wrong?

I have been planning to pull them off and powdercoat them anyways.

Porsche pads dust a lot more than aftermarket - maybe you have porsche pads in the back and aftermarket in the front - it doesn't matter what the bias is

Mark,
i meant those two stainless plates which are bolt on to caliper. Plates installed to the pads/pistons are mainly to kill noise.
