It says right there on the page that it is a position sensor, can probably be used to sense crankshaft or camshaft position. From what I gather, it is an optical sensor, rather than the magnetic pickup design that the 944 and many other cars use for the crank position sensor. Since the 944 already has a perfectly good CKP (yeah they go bad eventually but who says this one wouldn't?), and wouldn't really need a cam position sensor since there is no sort of variable camshaft timing, I don't see the use for this product on our cars.

Sounds to me like a stupid name for a cam sensor.
