I drove mine in similar cold recently and although cold start ups certainly made for minor extra oil consumption I made sure to get it to operating temperature before shutting it down.
Starting an engine and shutting it down without it reaching its operating temp is just not good.

Let me know and do you guys think i should change oil just for winter driving even when its 30 out?
Leave a bottle of 20w-50 outside tonight, & then try to pour it in the morning. I think it'll open your eyes a bit.

The factory may have recomended 15w-40, but I doubt it was diesel oil. That has additional additives for diesel engines. Not sure they would be good for a catalytic converter. The other thing is that back in the early '80s, synthetic oil wasn't common. Today there isn't a turbo engine that a manufacturer would recomend you put conventional oil in. Heat creates sludge. Turbo engines create sludge faster. Sludge clogs oil galleys. Clogged oil galleys create lack of lubrication. Lack of oil lubrication causes engines to fail.

You looked a little bit cold last night when I saw you on the post road. Yes that was me at the light in the silver Civic Si that asked you to roll down your window. Did the window go back up? You know how slow they can get; I have to rebuild my passenger widow switch on the drivers’ side. I have to reach over and use the one on the passenger door because the other one is too slow.
