Default Replacing stock muffler = performance gain?

Hard to find definitive info when searching,

I picked up a spare stock muffler and I have intentions of cutting out the muffler and welding a straight pipe in its place. Does this make much of a performance difference or is it just a waste of time?

Most of the gains would be from removing the cat, I'm pretty sure the stock mufler is a straight through desing or atleast something that isnt very restrictive.
