Just wondering 89951 DREAMER, did you have your Escort cups and 500lb springs in your avatar?

I just started my car this morning since not driving it Friday and the symptoms were back, backfiring, surging, bucking, you name it, idle is now at 700 rpm, putting back old APE chips and throwing these away

Were you in 4th or 5th gear?

Does the car stall? Mine did. Also, do these symptoms appear as soon as you start the car, or does it take a while?

My car ran great with the Max chip until after about 45 minutes. Then it would turn into a coughing, bucking, backfiring mess, stalling constantly and not running in any gear.

On my car it was the DME unit itself. Replaced with an identical factory unit I found used and all is back to normal, although I really liked how the car ran with the chip during the first 45 minutes!

Along the way, I replaced TPS, Cycling Valve, Idle Control Valve and several other idle related parts to no avail.

I was in the top of 4th gear when it blew... I was always told to never trust a chip to give good A/F ratio but the idle and everything was improved over the autoauthority chips so I just went with it.

Funny, I was in 4th or 5th at night and floored it in both until I hit 150 then I backed down and as I exited the white coolant vapor started coming out the tail pipe and the misfiring started. My mechanic said never to WOT in top gears as the car's engine is at the most stress in the two upper gears, so now I just floor it in 1-3 and gently in 4th and 5th. I blew it with my Autothority chips back in July, in cylinder #4 where all of them blow it at from the steam I guess...

Never floor it in top gears? That sounds rediculous.

I think after spending $2,374 on a machined head and new exhaust studs, etc. it sounds like good advice, plus it makes sense...

Flooring it in top gears with the proper afr is not a problem. Doing so without it in any gear will lead to hg problems.

Spending 2500 bucks on a sweet head only to be a pud on the throttle sounds like a waste to me.

Well, the APE chips I had are notoriuous for leaning out at higher rpms, and I found that out the hard way...

AFR is not the the only thing that is important in high gear on a turbo.
Timing is VERY important.

Keep in mind that you turbo spools earlier in high gears - so you need to make sure that your engine is prepared for earlier torque.

If the timing is not and can not be retarded enough, or worse, if the DME is being "tricked".....well, boom.

Timing is perfect...

No, it does not stall, I let it warm up real good before I floor it or go beyond 3,000 rpm. the first day I put them on it also ran well, it was warm, but for some reason the symptoms start afterwards. It is not backfiring, but it does occasionally buck, last night I was passing a car in 3rd gear and at around 4,000 rpm it bucked, just cut out, then today it is fine, frustrating. My mileage appears to be somewhat the same as with the APE chips, but it does boost more, boost comes in sooner, you feel more of a kick, and it accelerates more aggresively, I must admit. I am getting 10 psi in first and I was getting 8 psi with the APE chips, big difference, in 4th I am at 15 psi, so there is definitely more power, but still bucking at higher speeds in 5th gear, is it worth it? I guess it all depends...
