Does the block have a sleeve in it IN the OPRV hole?

I think, now think is the key word that you CAN get an 86 OPRV in the 87 hole but you can't get an 87 in the 86 sleeve. The tensioner could have been installed, it's fairly easy to do with the engine out - the key is if the engine has the sleeve in it at the OPRV and the only way to do that is remove the housing.

Let me check the spares locker in the garage see if I have an 87 new or used one out there
You can add a quart of oil (don't drive it) to the pan and see what happens to the pressure - if it stays good, then something is wrong with the pick up, the seal, or the worst case is the girdle didn't get enough sealant on it and air is getting in the oil galley. Drain the quart if the pressure was good and see what happens.

It sounds like a sticky OPRV. Especially since it’s a fresh rebuild – any ‘stuff’ that was in the engine has to pass by the oil pressure relief valve. Any little debris can cause the piston to hang up. Push on the piston to make sure that it can move in and out freely with out hanging up.

If the OPRV does not form a decent seal or is stuck open the oil pump cannot pull oil from the pan. I went through this on an engine a few years ago. The piston retaining clip inside the OPRV had someway moved down about 1/8 of an inch and the piston would not move upward enough to seal. So I would definitely make sure the OPRV is the correct one and sealing properly.

It's an '87 block with an '86 OPRV... Symptoms were fluctuating oil pressure and after a few starts, no oil pressure at all.

Once we get the right OPRV in there I'll let you know if it's fixed.

I believe the OPRV on the left is the early one piece and the one on the right is the 87 and later. The 87+ is longer than the earlier ones.
