I like having a car that is street legal. This is really a very good deal though. They have much money tied up in this. The parts alone would make Lart blush.

Does anyone know if the 928 transmission would work in our cars or how much modification is required?

Adding a little fuel to the fire, here. Our friends at the Secret Car Club Of America (SCCA) actually have some specs for 944 Turbos in their hill climb/time trial classifications that make reference to allowing Hewland boxes and (IIRC) 54 mm intakes....as if they were shooting at the spec of a specific car. Could this be an overlooked historic reference to the Milledge/Kelly Moss car(s)?

Who cares if it's legal! If you have $25k to spend on a transmission NO ONE should question your judgement. hehe.

Patrick,

I knew this might catch your attention. Many of the issues you are currently dealing with will be handled with the parts on this car. You could part everything else.

Go to the link and contact the seller. I don't know if it's still for sale. Shipping to Australia via tanker isn't too bad.

The car is still for sale. I have been in contact with the current owner and passed owners today. The current owner just bought it to mark it up and make some money. You can tell by talking to him he is just trying to turn it which is all fine and dandy but the value of the car will be in the eye of the holder of the dollars. It was imported by Al Holbert but never raced under him. He just imported it and sold it so the car has no value in race history. Since it is now nowhere close to the Escort spec's as imported for that series, that value is gone. So if interested make sure you price it as just a nicely built 944T race car and not a car with valuable or appreciating race history, there is none.
Anyway it is a very nice car and anyone wanting more info can PM me since I found out more than I wrote here.
Oh by the way the prev owner said he had no problem running the gearbox in PCA but was not sure if it was legal or no one ever looked. Well I guess that really didn't help much.

It is very interesting but probably not quite the right time for me.
Has anyone priced such a gearbox? I thought Guns priced a Hollinger sequential which was approx $40k but this was probably with paddles too.

Hmm, nice idea but it can't handle enough hp unless they can make some changes to it? How realistic would the Z06 be?

Hmm seriously, what are the alternatives after the stock gearbox's for highly modified versions of our cars? Hewland profess to make race only boxes, but are open to suggestion if you really want a race car gearbox in your streetcar however I think they would do their best to talk you out of it . How realistic is the Corvette box?

The practicality of any major component swap (assuming it physically fits) is limited only by the fabrication skiils needed. If the swap were considered popular and practical enough there are literally hundreds of cottage industry shops (beginning with, but not limited to, Kelly Moss and Lindsey) who could fab or commission a shifting tube, switching gear, drive shaft yoke, mounts and CV/axles.

The question is really not how in the technical sense, but rather "why" in the business sense. Consider the case of Renegade. Would be very interesting to see if they sell a hundred 944/914/911 conversions kits in a year's time. Only guessing, but I would guess not, as we see a dozen or so such finished cars for sale in any given year. For discussion's sake, say they sell 50 at what, $800 each? That's $40K in gross sales for producing and holding inventory on a garage full of bellhousings and what nots. God bless the folks who convert their passionate love niche performance cars into small businesses, but God Help 'Em, too!

Strong stable aftermarket companies like Paragon, Pelican, Performance Products (Automotion), Bavarian Auto make their living on main stream maintenance, restoration and repair parts. That business base allows them to provide specialty parts like the great Paragon adjustable perch strut kits, but I fear their doors could not stay open simply on specialty go-fast stuff.
