...when you "mat" the gas pedal and the boost builds, does the tacho-mounted boost needle go ALL the way to the right, or just PART of the way to the right?
My car's been chipped/modded since long before I bought it, so I'm just curious...

Hmm, that is interesting. Ever since I installed an aftermarket guage I don't think I have ever looked at in on boost since then, so a little over 3 years. I might have to check that later, when I get my car back together. I THINK, my guage would go to about 2 bar with my upgrades and running 15/16psi but can't say for sure. Before any upgrades I wouldn't go to 2 bar on the guage, only like 1.7 bar-ish.

my '89 with weltmeister chips pegged the stock gauge. i have since installed a vdo aftermarket gauge and get between about 16 psi of boost on the same chip set at wot.

The stock boost gauge is not accurate. Do not trust it. That said....I would show ~.8bar boost on the stock gauge and actually show ~15psi on the Autometer with APE MAF/chips and 38mm Tial with test pipe.
