Seems to me that in GTS2 you can run a 944 Turbo and do well. GTS3 seems to be mostly an E36 M3 class. Not sure why, but they seem to dominate there. Once you are in GTS4 I'd fugure the 944 turbo has a shot again.

Easy answer – set your engine up for torque not horsepower. Intentionally make it inefficient at higher RPM – you could use an EBC to roll off the boost as RPM goes up and therefore kill the high end HP. You could come up with over 400 ftlb at the wheels and still fit in under the HP to weight ratio. You would absolutely kill the E36s off the corners.

Chris,
Unfortunalty I believe the GTS class uses hp and torque to class the cars. I am not very familiar with the rules however.

I think it uses an average of hp and torque if torque > hp

thats correct. here are the rules: http://www.gtschallenge.com/rules.htm

This is a great group to run with...it's growing fast and all the guys are really laid back and focused on being safe...and racing. I've found that SCCA seems more focused on making sure there is no possible way to cheat "gain an advantage" and it's just cheaper if you're really wanting seat time...i get a ton of track time at every event...

It may not be they are smarter than usual, but that somebody else already did what you said and they had to respond.

yea i've still got some learning to do...but i'm getting pretty fast...i was mostly drawing my conclusions from the results of the NASA championship race...oh and i know i'd smoke this guys if i could turn up the power...but with the weight to power equalizer they seem to be dominating us...

that's the kinda thinking i've been looking for...great idea...now to put the plan in action

EDIT: damn it...after reading the next post i remembered why I already tuned it the way that it is...i have the torque and horsepower peaking immediatly and than holding flat throught the RPM range...it's actually been hard to get used to cause throttle modulation is harder...i might have to back off a bit.

I've never known so many "honest" racers...
Electronic boost control. Hi boost setting and low boost seting.
Put it on hi boost when you're racing. Maybe giving you a 50hp advantage. Then if anyone complains, click it over to low and dyno for the....

If you think the winners aren't cheating in some way.. You're dead wrong.

wow. I'm in the same boat really. I race a NA 944, and have a TON of friends the race M3's. Next year I'd like to step up into something faster like an M3/951. However here are the pros and cons that I see

M3 Pros:
More parts (more cars produced)
cheaper parts ($30 chinese brake rotors, that last 1/2 a season, yes please!)
wider range of suspension choices
wider range of wheels (cheaper wheels to boot)
NA power, those I6's will rev till you are tired of shifting or money shift
More classes to race in
Lots more cool parts (like the 10 different LSD rear ends you can swap into this car in no time, or the 6 speeds)

M3 Cons:
Motors are expensive, anything over 250whp will be $texas
its not a 951
they are bricks, with a front end that large you may as well get out and push

951 pros:

power is easy to get
car can be WAY lighter than an e36 ever could

951 Cons:
Age, and rarity
Expensive parts, things break more, the local shops here are constantly working on these cars
Turbos, they will never give you the same response as a NA

I mean i love the 951, and I'm getting a PPI done on a local track car later next week, but i am really thinking about an m3. I dd a 328 that was an old track car. I'm really thinking about caging that and buying something else. we'll see though

Just did the math and I would be running GTS4. Does anyone know what other cars run in that class and who usually comes out on top?
