Default Do I need to remove fluid in head stud area?

I am replacing a headgasket and notice some oil/coolant in the area around a few head studs. I think I remember seeing something on here that the fluid in there should be removed because it could cause a problem when it gets heated with no room for expansion when the head is clamped down. Is this true and what would be a good way to get the fluid out (motor is in car) ?

Jam paper towel down there and let it soak up.

Brake cleaner would help out.

But you will never be able to remove ALL the oil in there, unless you tip the block over. You will be fine regardless.....

If you dont dry out the head stud holes on a BMW it will crack the block when you reinstall the bolts. I've never taken apart my 951 motor, but I cant imagine that they have some fancy head bolt fluid relief technology that would prevent this. A little compressed air should do the trick.

I use foot long pipe cleaners from Micheal's (or any other arts and crafts store).

A few blasts of compressed air should do the trick.
