You have to capture the freon (don't vent it to the atmosphere) and then take the old one off. Put the new one in and have a vaccuum drawn on the system to remove any moisture. You can then recharge it. If you are using R-12 instead of R-134, you should take it to an A/C shop that can hold the freon as it is VERY expensive to replace. You're better off converting to R-134.

if you are talking about the A/c Reciever/Drier, it's not just that easy. THe driers purpose is to remove moisture from the a/c system. so if you are replacing yours, and you open it up before install (a short period is ok) and it becomes saturated with ambient air moisture, it's mostly useless. WHen replacing one, after your get it put in, the A/C system needs to be sucked into a vacuum for at least an hour before a/c system recharging begins. That way all the moisture is removed from the system and it can function correctly.

I'm no expert, but if sounds like as long as you don't try to use it before it gets vacuumed out and the freon recharged it should be fine. Or, simply that it won't do anything until you do.
