I've been working at a detailing shop for the past few summers; we've found that Autosol works the best. Its much stronger than other brands like Mothers. It doesn't really matter what wax you use, but it doesn't need to be expensive stuff as the Autosol already gives it a layer of protection. Remember though, if you use any kind of wheel cleaner when you wash your car, you'll be stripping all of the wax/polish off the wheels.

I used blue magic on mine. Then it ran out and I got a mother product. I did not like it as much as blue magic, but I will use it till it is gone.
It would take about 10 mintues per wheel to clean to a perfectly clear shine. I never waxed them after that. Maybe I should have.

This is what I've used for over 15 years and have never found anything better IMO. Nothing fancy, no velvet bag and registration papers, just a damn good polish.

That Mothers Power ball is a dream. After that the best tip I can give is to dry your wheels first after you wash your car. Any hard water stain is really hard to get off. Do that and they will stay shiney for a long time before you need to polish. When I do, I use Mother's.
