Default Sealing ring in the end of the crossover pipe...

Ok I am a ways through a turbo swap and I am at the point where the new turbo is in and bolted down EVERYWHERE...

I just as I torqued down the last bolt on the crossover pipe to the turbo and I discovered that the round metal sealing ring (the one that SHOULD be in the end of the crossover pipe) was laying on creeper under the car... It must have fallen out and I did not hear it hit concrete so I didn't miss it.

HOW BLOODY IMPORTANT IS THAT RING???

Wil it leak exhaust with out it?

Can I loosen the cossover pipe at the header and the wastegate connections and try and get it in that way? I really Really REALLY (that is three reallies) DO NOT want to take the turbo loose at this point.

As much you don't want to hear this you should unbolt the crossover and insert the sealing ring. You might be able to sneak the ring in if you just loosen a couple of bolts.

in the x-over you need it.
After the turbo its just a leak, who cares - but between the head and turbo a leak affects spoolup and POWER.
So obviously this is a leak we cannot bear.
You might sneek it in there if you are good enough.

I am thinking take the crossover pipe loose at the header and waste-gate connections and then loosen the 4 bolts at the connections to the turbo and sneak it in from the top.

Or is there enough flex in the crossover to simply take the bolts out and try and pry it over? prying on the exhaust seems like a bad idea to me.

Feasibility?

I'd loosen the 4 bolts that connect the turbo-to-crossover and some of the header-to-crossover bolts. That might give you enough play to sneak the ring in from the top like you were saying.

to make sure it stays there, when you get it in, a tiny amount of moly grease on opposite sides or a coulpe little dabs of 574 will hold it.

+1 to using a little grease to make sure it stays put.

Could the original one still be stuck in the pipe?

Ok I or rather my buddy got it back in. THAT sucked. Here is the weird part now one of the bolt holes at the header to the cross over pipe junction will not line up...

Why is life never simple?

The cars like to taunt you when working on them. Mine does it all the time. I suggest pushing/pulling the pipe until it lines up. Possibly resort to hammering the bolt in once you get it lined up enough to start?

Taunt me? mine loves to do it. Usually it is something like this damn pipe not lining up...

Well the turbo, it's in and she runs. Doing the break in now...

Here's a tip, install the downpipe and turbo as an assby.
