Default S2 bell housing on 951 motor?

Will a 944 S2 bell housing will fit onto a 951 motor? The S2 bell housings have a removal plate on the bottom for easy access to the clutch assembly (much more user-friendly than stock 951 housings). I have an opportunity to buy one, but want to confirm that it will bolt on without any fitment issues. Thanks.

I think you will need the starter too.

I think you might have the same issues people have using a 944 bellhousing on a 951. The 951 has a 240mm clutch, the NA's, including the S2, have a 225mm. As a result the starter mounting is just a bit outboard on the 951 bellhousing to mesh correctly with the larger starter ring. Even if you replace the starter (BTW which is the same for all) the starter gear can bind up. I thought it was only the 968 that had the segmented bellhousing, I wasn't aware the S2 was the same? I agree though, a more user friendly 951 bellhousing would be great. Andial951 has an older thread about the differences in bellhousings and the resultant starter damage his mechanic caused by using an NA housing.

its only the 968 that has the removeable plate from the bell housing. the 944s2 is the same as a turbo bell housing in design.

Ahhh.....ok, thanks. I was confused about 968 vs S2 housings...but the one I have an opportunity to buy has the removable plate, so must be from a 968. Given the difference in clutch sizes (240mm vs 225mm) will the turbo clutch assembly fit in the 968 bell housing? If so, maybe there is a way to relocate the starter a little bit??? The hampster in my brain is sprinting on his little wheel right now...and I'm wondering if it's possible to bore out the starter housing and them shim it to fit up against the flywheel. Hmmmm....

You'll have to tell the hamster to get the torque tube and short coupler in the front also if you are going to use a 968 bellhousing otherwise it won't work, they are different. I think the bolt pattern is different at the transaxle also. I suppose the starter could be moved a bit outboard but the fit is very critical to work smoothly. The larger 951 clutch/PP will 'fit' in the 968 BH but the clearance is tighter, especially if you go with aftermarket components. Sounds like a lot of work.

Hamster now thinking about cutting large hole in bottom of stock 951 bell housing! If the 968 housing won't fit, then make the stock housing work the same way.

Thanks guys.
