Default belt tensioner question

i had my alternator belt off and figured i would try to free up the tensioner a little bit with penetrating oil then working it back and forth. Anyway one side doesnt thread in all the way and neither comes off. is that normal or is there just that much rust inside?

It's easy for dirt and junk to settle in the threads on those tensioners. I had to replace one of mine recently because I didn't clean the threads properly and over-torqued the tensioner to the point that I stripped the threads. The good news is they are not terribly expensive to buy new ($40-60)and may be easy to source from a junk yard. But - if you can make it work so that it holds appropriate tension on the belt, then who cares if one side doesn't thread as far as the other? My $.02.

nope, the belt for the alternator and A/C compressor is tightened by one strut and the belt for the power steering is tightened by another. The timing and balance belts are completely seperate and they are covered by a black cover on the front of the engine. 83-86 944 timing belts are tensioned by a roller that can be moved, the 87 has a spring tensioner, and 88-89 models have a hydraulic tensioner.

I have a power steering tensioner for sale if anyone needs one. It's in great shape. PM me if interested.

(Sorry for the blatant self-promo Cory, but a free bump if nothing else)
