Question Turbo temp sensor question

While pulling the motor I removed the connector to the temp sensor at the turbo water inlet. The only way I could unthread it required the wires to be twisted as it turned pulling a small brass rod tip with it. The part left on the water pipe had a bore for that rod to go into. Is this how they all work? Seems like the 'cap only' should turn freely or the wires would get ruined after a few removals. Is mine broken or something?

I haven't used a stock one in a long while but, I thought the stock one pulled straight up/off, like a spark plug?
