Why am I getting too much boost?

Any idea what actually caused it? Sounds like it was almost new?
I was looking at buying a car on ebay that had the same thing happen shortly after install. There was uncertainty as to precisely what damage it had caused - possibly just head gasket. I was prepared to take a chance to a point, but in the end it went for too much.

I have had boost control problems on 3 different occasions on my car. I use a black **** controller and a dual port gate. When it quits, I go through the following:
Set my air compressor to 20psi and pressurized the line that runs to the black **** and waste gate.
If ANY leaks are heard, you can fairly quickly trace them down and find them.
If no leaks then a click should be heard from the waste gate as the valve moves.
If you get no click from the waste gate then take out the black **** and test it on the bench with your 20psi air. You should be able to turn the valve so that it all passes through or so that no air passes through.
If there are no leaks, no black **** problem, and you hear the click but it STILL doesn't work, then take the waste gate out and do the same pressure test on the bench. Blow in the exhaust inlet to the waste gate when you pressurize the control input.

I had the same problem with the **** dialed all the way down - in fact it generated random boost. Only explaination we could com up with is that the tubes to the wastegate acted as a closed air pressure vessel, with a perssure depending on the temperature.
It was easily solved (after a blown HG) by opening the boost controler to the original setting
