Question EGT results

Hello all,

After installing my egt, I read normal value for idle and no boost but too high for full boost.

- idle 485°C, 905°F
- driving with vaccum, no boost 550 to 650 °C, 1022 to 1202°F
- little boost (no more than 10 psi) 650 et 850°C, 1202 to 1562°F
- full boost third gear (until 6000rpm) then 4(until 5000rpm) and a little 5 => 1025°C (1877°F) it seams to stand at this temperature.

My actual config on my turbo s:
- 18 psi boost but it raise down at 4500 rpm to finish at 12 psi at 6000 rpm (turbo is out, and motor is bad to, big oil consumption)
- stock filter and air box
- scivision maf
- Maxhp eprom
- stock exhaust
- stock WG with 10 mm spacer

Thanks ;-)

Which cylinder is the probe on and where located in the exhaust?

My car had the temp sensor on #3. The headers were wrapped and had a couple of cracks in the welds under the heat shields. It typically would get as high as 820C, but would spike on gear shifts as high as 1000C. The spikes weren't long enough to see on the Zeitronix, but registered on the peak hold.

I have a EGT sensor in the crossover pipe. When running hard I will get up to 920C in fifth gear. I am wondering if I should make the AFR richer on top.

Well I dont know it helps or confuse things, but heres my figures

Cruising 80mph no boost 1450F
WOT 5 gear 80 to 160 mph 1650 - 1700F , at 15 psi

my sensor is mounted in the crossover pipe, which as discussed in Lausts egt thread, makes the temp read fractionally higher than at the port, 100F higher measured by Laust at WOT, but no different at cruising.

So your 1877F does look high, but where have you measured it?
I would do another run at 15 psi.

Sly_alex uses the EGT kit sold by Laust Pedersen, so the probe is located in the CO tester (X-over pipe).

In which case sly_alex do a 15psi run and then you can compare the figures to mine a little more closely as we have both measured them at the same point.

Frank, I beleive you get MaxHP eproms, what boost pressure do you run ?

Ross, what chips do you use ? Vitesse board, I guess, right ?

What should the temps actually be?

Just as an aside, the technical info for the new twin turbo BMW 335i mentions that the exhaust inlet temp (inlet to the turbo I assume) can be up to 1050C and they only run 0.8 Bar.

EGT is more about igniton timing than A/F ratio....

Thanks

That will be the most interesting comparison.

Remember... there is NO tricks that can be applied in chips that can make a stock like 951 do 20+ psi without knocking and still keep the EGT low.

The only way to do it is to retard the timing a lot and then your EGT will go up.

Another side note, depending on how deep your probe tip sits you will get very different results.

Well, timing is the issue of the high EGT's, but also how much of those temps are due to a stock turbo just being way out of it's range??

Is he dialing down the boost to 12psi or is it just rolling off to 12 psi, hence the turbo is "trying" to keep making 18psi but it just can't.

All he is making in the top end from 15-18psi above 5K is heat....a lot of heat....

So in this case is it just timing pulled way back or just a lot of heat from the turbo out of it's range???
