Default Axel halfshaft diameter on S2 and turbo?

Is the halfshaft axel slightly thicker on an S2 and Turbo?

I am installing new CV joints and the oetiker clamps provided with the kit are just a bit too small.

I happen to have a boot only kit provided by the PO and it has a slightly larger oetiker clamp that seems to work.

PET doesn't seem answer the question; was wondering if any of the gurus out there knew for sure?

Looking at PET it seems that 1987 on, all Turbo/S2 were part no. 951 332 038 02
All NA were no. 944 332 038 01, all years - same no. for 1986 Turbo.

I believe the only change was to the number of splines on later models, 87 on.
I had to gently tap my clips on with a socket as they were a tight fit.

Not sure this helps you much ! What year is your car ?

Hi Mike,

Looks like the same info I have. The Oetiker clamp (inner boot clamp) that came with the CV joint is a size 31 and the ones that came with boot repair kit are size 33. The size 31's are too small; the size 33 seem to be correct.

Question is - why are there two different sizes ???
