Excellence Magazine - 944 GTR Article
Just got the May 2007 issue of Excellence and it has a great article on these awesome race cars. It's nice to see that they didn't forget about them. This is definately a must-have edition for those of us who collect history on our cars, especially racing ones. I think that Guns951 would really appreciate this one too.

Yeah - some marketing genius over there did 5 ****ing minutes of homework and saw how many hits the Rennlist 951 forum gets by young kids who love to bust one over a shiny new magazine.
Good work, Ca. Sherlock.

Rob,
I'm not sure if you get the Christophorus, Porsche magazine but a coupple issues back they showed pics of the Porsche Motorsports restoring a 924 GTS(?Not sure on the code lettering) that was amazing. I will see if I can find it and scan it.

Winning in professional racing (or any racing for that matter) is always a function of the rules and the state of the sport at any given time. The major manufacturers play a very interesting dance with the sanctioners that is never stable.
Think about it. The sanctioner's dream is to have large number of factory backed entries and a playing field that brings suspense to the event as to who will win. Not necessarily an even playing field, just one that prevents domination. As soon as one marque becomes dominant it's time to change the rules. Since Porsche is known for attacking a single category and dominating it, they are often the victims of fluid rules and reorganizations.
The 951 was caught in this funnel of fun for all of its production life....thus the need for the Rothmans Cup and the Turbo Cup spec series. Originally, the 951 performance focus was going to be SCCA Showroom Stock but that attack was still-born after ol Freddie Baker killed the field at the 84 (?) running of the 24 Hours of Nelsons by over 20 laps. IIRC, the rift over the SCCA outlawing the 951 from Showroom Stock was the reason that Porsche focused on IMSA/Escort and Trans Am in North America and created the Turbo Cup spec series in Europe.
Similar story, although I'm not as familiar with the details, for the 968 Turbo RS...built for a category that never got off the ground????

One other stupid question. Is the legendary yellow GT2 Raetech 944 that always contends at the SCCA National (David Finch) a GT2 chassis with an NA Motor From Hell under the hood? Sure favors the look from the outside.

SCCA also killed the turbo Porsches in Trans-Am by adding so much weight that the cars could not compete against the v8 powered american cars. The story was even worse in gt-1 because the inlet restrictor was insanely small and the engine could make no power.
