G'day 90944, nice to see another Adelaide based 944 rennlister. I have to agree it is pretty punishing here at times, it was 43 degrees C in the shade at Mallala a couple of weeks ago and oil and water temps were indicative. I limited my runs to 15 minutes at a time due to the temps that day.... that and I wasn't convinced that I had fully bled my cooling system.
What you want is called a swirl pot. The idea is to get the air out of the coolant by making a vortex chamber. There are 3 connections: Input from head, output to system, and a small outlet on top to allow air to escape the system (but not at the expense of a pressure loss). The air outlet is usually run into the expansion tank, not sure how you could get another connection into the stock expansion tank though since it's made of plastic.
Hello Im trying to update my car and wanted to know where you ordered your swirl pot?
The picture from SeaCay I believe is a Jon Milledge Engineering race motor. He was one of the prime engine builders many years ago known for high end engines, notice the intake with individual runners and carbon fiber plenum. I don't believe he is still in business.
Here is another shot from a different angle:
The biggest issue as was pointed out earlier… time… 20 years… when was the last time anyone actually “ cleaned” their rad? The proper way to do it is pull it .. lay flat on the ground and gently shake the hell out of it.. ( front side down) you would be amazed and what comes out and the pile of crap you end up sweeping off the floor…. Water doesnt work well..especially if its been a track car, the drying compounds they use to clean up messes on the track will swell inside the fins and make it that much harder to get out…
