Question Ok, so tell me about the 340 kit from Lindsey.......

So I am in charge of putting together a track car for a friend of mine. Car is an '87 951 in excellent mechanical condition with very minor mods. I talked to one of the techs over at Lindsey the other day and we came to the conclusion that the 340 RWHP kit offer's the kind of power we are looking for.

So I guess what I am looking for are opinions, install tips, reviews, etc. from people that have used this kit/used the equipment in this kit.

What kind of track duty is the car going to see? If he's interested in PCA stuff (or any other series) he should look at the rule book(s) prior to any mod's.

Both our track cars WILL NOT conform to any of those rules. Both cars are going to be kept just barely street legal so we can go play whenever there is a fun run or something.

I just did that kit for friend last year. He added a WBO2 with it, hard pipes, and chose the Mafterburner, which worked great with the MAX chips; three runs(data log) and the car was 98% tuned, using the built in calculator on the Mafterburner. Install tips, pretty straight forward, also did all vac lines, venturi delete and all cooling hoses at the same time. I drove the car the other day for a couple of days, the sport turbo really impressed me. It's responsive, pulls hard to redline of shift point, just a very nice turbo for the 2.5 and the A/F ratios were spot on. The only thing I didn't like was he wanted to retain the water cooling instead of a dry turbo but other than that, car fired right up. Oh, he chose a AFPR instead of the 3bar unit. This was done on a full rebuild, so new clutch, slave cylinder, hose, etc.

Things I didn't do, wish I had, notch the bell housing on the S&R sensors, and he ran out of funds so the 3pc crossmember and 2pc crossover pipe got booted, probably going to do them in the next couple of weeks.

It depends on what you want from it. I heard you will have lower coolant temps without watercooling because its not running through the hot turbo. Some say that the extension in life of the turbo because of watercooling is not that much. You will have to install a turbo timer or idle it after hard runs because the coolant wont circulate through the turbo after you shut it down

What we want is a solid, reliable, powerful 951 that we can take to TWS and have a good time with DE's - but also be able to drive it on the street.

The 951 by defualt has an after shutdown turbo waterpump, can I use that with the new one?

Daniel, you haven't seen our track car at TWS because I have it here with me. However, it will be back in TX after Mayfest at Hallett. We have had a oil cooled only Kokeln on that car, going on four years now. We change the oil after each event, let the car cool down after the checker, idle it to the trailer in the pits, open the hood, and shut it down. Tracking the car, we find the maintenance much easier without a water cooled turbo, but that's just Jim and myself. We also don't have belt covers, that's an ease of maintenance too. BTW, my street car, Kokeln, oil cooled only, is going on it's 6th year, but it's not a DD, just weekends and nice weather. I would run it oil cooled only, get a second oil cooler for the car since it's going to see track duty at TWS, especially if you do some summer events there.

Got a spare $10.5M lying around, TWS is for sale you know.

Just FYI with 310 rwhp my 944 turbo is competitive with just about anything at TWS short of 500 hp. TWS is tight enough that you can have fun even with 200-250 rwhp. I would target putting 50% of his budget into the suspension and brakes

Im going to try and fix my car sometime today or tommorow... if you get the kit let me know, Im prob going to be going with VR just because of some issues I had with lindsey but you cant beat that price for everything your getting. Also you might want to ask your customer about possibly getting the X-Over 2 piece conversion with a coating. Makes life a little easier.
