I'm running without a catalytic converter. That adds to the effect. The noise was very obvious to me.

It's horse's for course's guys. If your car is out in the elements then seal, if like mine then there's no need. The upside for not sealing is the rear lense's look better, i.e. I've yet to see a seal job that doesn't have sealant sticking out all over the place.
no sweat John. I found this out the hard way. The driver side rear cubby can hold a hell of a lot of water. lol That's where it pools in mine. Turkey baster anyone? lol Anyway, I've since sealed it.
I haven't noticed ANY change whatsoever in noise/fumes and I don't have a cat either.

Yep, no cat on my car and no fumes. Yet, ballistic has said he did notice an obvious difference in his car?

That can come from a large number of places. The hatch seal, window seals, slight header leaks, slight hatch separation at the hatch frame, and the list goes on a bit. Atleast we know it isn't a clogged cat! lol

I'm curios now too lol.

I do not have any of these leaks: hatch seal, window seals, slight header leaks, slight hatch separation at the hatch frame. My conclusion would be the tail lights. I am currently modding them and tinkering with the lighting system. When I drive it around the block, the smell and noise seep in from one place- the tail lights.

I used the OEM butyl cord when I re-installed mine recently. If you take your time and stretch the cord the right amount, you can have no excess bulging out (also you need to clean all old residue from the tailights as well):

What's wrong with silicon? I've used industrial silicon before and it worked fine...

Perry is right, i could not find the Butyl tape and used silicon to seal them. When i enventually found the Butyl tape, i removed the silicon........it was a bitch to remove.

Butyl tape comes off very easily, almost no effort.

you were lucky to have it dried out, I spent 30 mins fighting my goo that was as fresh and sticky as when it left the factory. I called porsche dealer and they said it was chassis goo, comes on rolls, any chassisshop should have it.

and YES it keeps water out. I took a testrun without it :|

Functionally silicone would be just fine, but if you ever have to paint your car, every trace of silicone will be a potential source for fisheyes. It is hard to completely eradicate it all.

Thank you! Yours does too, and that is the cleanest back end going. The color-matched badging really completes the look!

EDIT: Hey, post #944! Yay!!

Both John and Allens rear ends look the business! (did i say that out loud? )

I think both of mine have been resealed poorly at some point as they both bulge and look unsightly when you look closely. I'll try my local 3M stockist for some of that sealant on a roll
