Best chip set-up for 18-23psi boost???
#62
I am using max951 chips. Russell (Max951) has chips for the 18-21 range. I know many folks are also using vitesse.
Also you will likely want/need to add to your list of goodies: wastegate, fuel pressure regulator, wideband EUGO, and maybe a fuel pump (if its not tip top)

I'm running an adj. fp reg, bosche hv fuel pump, k26/7 turbo, full exhaust, metal hg, lindsey dual port wg... and so on. So vitesse can custom tune the chips prior? So that on the dyno it pretty much be minimal for the chip tuning??? Any input from the Vitesse sponsers???

you need to contact Vitesse directly. And you need to figure out if you have a k27/6, a k26/8 or a k26/6. Never seen a K26/7.
Vitesse can set the chips any number of ways, but you don't tweak the chips on the dyno.

So in other words maybe a super 61 and chips would be comparable to the vitesse set-up? I have a k 27 hotside with a k 26 coldside... It was done my Autoedge in MN if anyone has heard of them...

Here it is 26psi on pump gas all day long on the track!! (NOT).
It's not magic, the 8V head is not the best when it comes to detonation (the 944S2, 968 are much more forgiving). Given the fact that the 951 CR, head design, stroke, IC.. the static variables remaining the same, with proper AFR there is so much boost you can run before it detonate, simple. The weather, and altitude affect this some, but basically we are talking about the same system. Ok, so we have AFR set where it needs to be. The only thing left is timing! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to pull enough timing to be able to run more boost, the cost will be in terms of performance (when you pull timing far too much, you are reducing the efficiency of the engine), and raising EGTs. Excessive EGTs will get you in trouble.. Now being able to juggle timing & boost to get the best performance on pump gas is not a simple task.
You have options:
- Run 21,22 or 25psi on pump gas. If you are lucky your HG goes, hopefully not the engine.
- Listen to someone conservative, and stick to 15psi on pump gas with plenty of margin for error.
- Add octane booster (Xyelene or Tuolene) or Water injection. Raise the octane rating.
- Get a 16V head on your 951, still you will not be able to run but a bit more boost.
- Get a different car, many allow you to run more boost on pump gas.
