P.s. I'm not sure I am going for more revving... Jon has persuaded me that 944's don't like revving and 8v engines don't like producing power at high revs. I WILL however be running as high a boost level as fuelling, flow restrictions, the laws of physics and Jon will allow.

Actually, speaking from experience that isn't necessarily true. I had a 3.0L 8V, with the Lindsey Racing Solid Lifter Kit, headwork, custom cam, different intake, and "tons" of other goodies too; but with no dry-sump. And I could safely run all day long that car at 7-7.5K easily. Getting a dry sump as part of the total system is ideally what you want, but it can rev that high with the right set-up. Been there, done that my friend. And I didn't use any Magical Pixexy Dust to achieve it too!

Anyone get any further down the road on this line of questioning? I am going to try an experiment of putting a 315 on a 10" just to see if it fits under the factory rolled '89 guard. This will give us a visual at least but please add anything to this post. There seems to be very few if any 305's available. I'm talking in r-spec rubber too here, not straight road tyres.

I have put 11" 996 wheels under my 89. I have used 285's on ET 40 wheels which clear on the outside, and 285's on ET65 wheels which clear on the inside.

So that would suggest I can get at least 305, if not 315 tires under my car, with 11" wheels ET 52 (although I have never tried it).

I am limited to 10's by PCA rules, so run 285's on anything from ET65 to ET40 wheels

Yes I'm currently running on 10" with the 285's but I will need to go as wide as possible I believe. I haven't seen too many 305's is another problem I'm having so if the 315's don't fit I may have to go down to 'only' 295's which is almost not worth the extra expense. I really want to go up to over 300mm if at all possible.

Default From Excellence - June 1998

Patrick, you may find this interesting. I just bought a ton of back issues from Excellence. Here is something we might find at least interesting, but no definitive answers. Anyway...

In the issue David Chen, who I hope you heard of?, modded his 1986 944T. He had on his car 17 x 10 and 17 x 11. He "squeezed" on 315/35ZR17 BFG Comp T/A (wow, old school!) onto the car. Also, he had on 750 lb. front springs and 450 lb. rear spring with the T-bar left on too. Two things worth nothing though. One, they don't mention in the article what size the off-sets he used. Two, he did modify the fenders a bit to make the tires fit. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that. Keep researching!

Patrick,

I have an '89 951 I've been working on for the past few months. i got some 996 hollow spoke Techno Sports rims. Rears are 18 x 11 with 63 offset. I got some Pirelli racing slicks - 305 x 660 x 18 - I'm told they will fit. I haven't got to that stage yet - still have to fit the tyres to the rims!

Anyway, I can probably do that in the next week or two and let you know.

What part of Sydney are you from anyway?

Rob, nice one mate. That's good to know. Yes I've heard of David Chen. Wonder if anyone has a lead on him for contact? Still, hearing that gives me hope. The other problem is finding R-spec 305's if the 315's are going to be too hard to fit. Has anyone heard of 305's in an 18" r-spec?

Geneqco, that's good to know. I will stay tuned to your fittings. Are you in Sydney? I'm in the East.

Actually re-reading that he had an '86 would have meant some definite body mods to fit them on as the pre-89's didn't even have factory rolled wheel arches. Like to find out more about him though.
Jason Judd is going to try to fit 315's to his 968cs turbo but I don't know if they're the same as ours?

You have to be a rennlist member I think.

Those tyres should fit, tight but as long as your suspension is not to soft they shouldn't rub, though every car is slightly different.
