Default %#&! How the heck to you remove the sunroof panel?

This is embarrassing...

1) read manual to be sure
2) try to undo clips and run up the panel per the instructions
3) panel does not come out

OK - what's the friggin' trick?

86 model year...

grrrrr.

After you release the clips and fully retract the arms the raise and lower the sunroof, you should be able to pull and slide it right off the guide.

My arms wont retract. The roof will go up and down normally, but for some reason they won't go all the way down. I've tried pulling the relay, reseting the motor, and making sure everying is where it needs to be, but no go for me either!

P.S. Check to make sure the key is in the accessory spot 1. If it isn't then the switches won't allow the arms to go all the way down.

Don't worry I had this when I first bought a 944 too!! 'If its working' you have to turn the ingition onto one click and then press the button to lower the roof, the mechanism sould then wind the catches right in and the roof will lift off free. If they dont move on one click try hitting or pushing the roof down first, sounds crude but sometimes works where the micro switch just hasn't been triggered to tell the car the roof is closed.

Isn't this power sunroof key position/switch postion trick the "secret handshake" of the 944 fraternity? Either that or how to reset the trip odo. I suspect that any first timer who buys a 944 without a manual has less than a 1% chance of mastering both of these functions without assistance.

There must be some global statistic available as well to determine what percentage of new 944 owners, in their glee upon mastering the trip odo reset conumdrum, summarily push the bar while the car is in motion and completely fritz their odo/speedo by stripping the nylon gear

soo...here's how it's supposed to work?

1 - undo clips
2 - raise / lower roof

upon lower, the rear arms should fully retract into the body and the panel should lift out....

...and if it doesn't, try pushing down on the roof panel a bit to help the arms free?

OK - will give it a try.

The arms can only be retracted if your ignition key is in position 1. If your key is in position 2 (your car is running) or position 0, the arms cannot be fully retracted.
It's my understanding that the system was designed so that the arms cannot fully retract when the car is running to prevent you from fully retracting the arms and having the sunroof fly off while driving.
When my gears stripped with the arms fully retracted and I drove on the highway, the rear of my sunroof did lift if my windows were up. So I just drove with them down, which sucks if it's cold or raining etc...
You can also retract the arms manually by gaining access to the sunroof motor. Hope this helps.

The key position is the secret handshake. Comes out with the flip of the hinges once you master the key thing.

Winner! Winner! Put the key in position 1 and *bingo* - the arms retract and out comes the panel!

Thank you so much; now I can try to figure out why the dumb thing leaks.

I thought the secret handshake was where all the drain holes are?

There are two holes under the sunroof -- Clear those before you spend the money on the seals

Been there; done that. Holes are fine and the old tubing has been siliconed onto the drain nipples. Looks like it's the seals. First step will be to remove the current seals and clean everything up and reattach; it's all pretty mucky. After that, time to spend $$ I guess.
