Pete Stout looked at a PowerHaus conversion of Graham Gillies' 1989 951. The conversion involved taking the displacement up to 2.8L by stroking with a 3.0L crank, a hybrid K27/K29 turbo charger and a host of other modifications. With stock fuel injectors, Graham's car made 415 RWHP (~488 Flywheel-HP) @ 1.3 bar. The article didn't specifically say so but I'd guess this was done with 100+ octane fuel. Further development was planned.

The back issue is still available at http://www.excellence-mag.com/back_issues.html

I have every issue.

However, I suggest you purchase the specific back issue you're interested in... simply to help support the magazine.

I'm printing out the order form right now

Out of all the 951 issues, which 3-4 would you suggest are the best???

That's an interesting question... I'll have to think about it a while.

Are there specific types of 951 articles (e.g. motorsports, engine upgrades, etc.) you're interested in?

Karl.

Just the ones that really have a lot of info or are good to have for a 951 collection.

I suggest ordering just a few issues initially, reading them and then determine if your opinion of the article agrees (or not) with my summaries.

So here are the first two I suggest:

"Giant Killer" by Pete Stout - #82, December 1998, page 88
Stout looks at a PowerHaus conversion of Graham Gillies' 1989 951. The article takes a detailed look at the conversion which involved taking the displacement up to 2.8L by stroking with a 3.0L crank, a hybrid K27/K29 turbo charger and a host of other modifications. With stock fuel injectors, Graham's car made 415 RWHP (~488 Flywheel-HP) @ 1.3 bar. The article didn't specifically say so but I'd guess this was done with 100+ octane fuel. Further development was planned.

"Bare-Knuckle Brawler" by Karl Glynn (cough, cough) - #134, December 2004, page 118
Glynn looks at the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup race car, used for one make race series in Germany, France, South Africa and Canada during the late 1980s. He also drives Pete Fitzpatrick's example from the Canadian Rothmans-Porsche series at Summit Point Raceway.

That 2.8 blew at the track. Huntley Racing changed the injectors and added their MAF and Split Second tuning module. I have this same thing in a box if anyone wants to come and get it. I don't think they tuned everything properly and the engine blew. Graham then built a 3.0. I heard that he wrecked that car and parted everything out.

PowerHaus was the king of the 951 modifications for a while about ten years back. Running the stock injectors and hitting 400 wheel hp is just asking for trouble. We used to just turn up the fuel pressure and make the banjo bolt smaller.

An example of how far things have come. My 89 951, which looks exactly like Graham's, including the suspension, hits 430 wheel hp with a 2.5 at 22psi. I am running 55# injectors, and these are probably too small for this hp. My AF never goes above 12 though.

Grahams car was a really nice 951.

George
