I sell reagent grade Xylene to hospital, reference & acedemic laboratories. It's very nasty stuff, way harsher that Toulene. Medical labs use the stuff to process tissue. So if you have a biopsy taken, the tissue is put into a tissue processor w/reagent grade xylene, formalin & isoporpanol. The tissue is then "cooked" so it can be cut and slides made to then send to the Pathologist. Due to recent OHSA/CETA regs most hospital labs have been forced to purchase $30,000 xylene recyclers so the used up stuff can be disposed of properly. Before this, they paid as much as $250/55 gal to get rid of it. So if any of you guys get to know your friendly local Histology Tech, there should be an unlimited supply of Xylene.
I'll stick to 100 octaine.....Xylene is a known & powerful carcinogen.

Since I'm in the industry, and for those who are worried, here is the MSDS sheet as per the OSHA site. Here is tons and tons of info on it for you. With respect to using it with 951s, Special Tool probably more knowledge than anybody I personally know.

Well, xylene is what, 117 octane? So, if you put in let's say 93 at the pump you just times the amount (gallons) times the octane (93), then do the same for the other agent. After that is said, you divide by total gallons in tank. Ex:
Fuel : 10 Gallons at 93 octane = 930
Fuel 2 : 1 Gallon at 117 octane = 117
Total Octane : 1047
Total Gallons (if dry when filling) : 11
Octane per gallon : 95.18
Now, as ST said, you never want to run more then a 40% because of glazing on the spark plugs but I see some are running 25% xylene. Running a 25% mix you yield a 99 with 93 at the pump. Bump up to 94 at the pump and 25% xylene would get you 99.75. At max 40% on 93 would get you 102.6.

FYI......from the Corvette article......."Xylene from industrial sources is “mixed-isomer” and has less octane boosting ability than toluene and a higher unit cost."
This is the difference in reagent grade vs industrial grade. Probably why labs are more concerned with the HAZMAT properties of xylene.........they get the good stuff!

mwc951: Good post, you are right! Sounds to me that basically we get the watered down stuff compared to them. Doesn't matter to me, I have an unlimited supply of both. So if that article stands correct, which I don't know, I'll use Toluene instead.
