New 951 Owner
Hi,
I just wanted to do a quick introduction. I just purchased a 1986 951 with 133k miles that is guards red with black interior in really good shape. The car is a bit rough, but it runs good, shifts smoothly, and boosts well. With some mild reconditioning and elbow grease, it will look all shiny and new. The only bummer is a dented front fender, nose panel, and broken fog lights (ouch! Expensive!). The t-belt has been changed (it feels like the balance shafts are in phase -- thanks Mitsu gods) and it has newer tires.
I love working on cars. The Porsche is definitely a good project for me. This is my forth turbo car (two DSMs and an Audi A4), so I feel quite comfortable tinkering with the Porsche. It fits well in our stable of cars (an Audi B5 A4 1.8T Quattro Tip and an e39 528iA). It was only natural to extend the German car collection and get a Porsche. However, I still cannot get over how much “louder” the 951 (wind noise, engine, and etc) is compared to the bimmer! I’ve become too spoiled .
I look forward to being an active and contributing member of the community. This 951 is in the home it desires and I am sure it will serve us well. I will post pictures this weekend.
Thanks,
Brett

Welcome to the board! Definatly a great source of ideas & info. You think it's loud now, wait till you lose the cat & put on a 3" muffler. Mods surely worth the performance enhancement, but will make it even more gutteral and louder.

Welcome to the Rennlist family. By the way, how deep are your pockets? You do realize you just bought a 944 Turbo right? Just kidding, enjoy it in good health. But some eye candy would be appreciated?

Yeah, the E39s sure are quiet... I'm a fan of the E28s myself (which are NOT quiet! haha). All good cars, however.
Congrats on the new addition to your stable, welcome to the addiction, and, of course, welcome to Rennlist.

Thanks for the welcome! I will post befores and afters when the forum lets me.
fwb42: I live in Central Ohio, but I do drive through Canton often. My wife's family lives south of East Liverpool, OH. I do plan on taking the 951 on the hilly backroads out there . Oh, and the car looks like yours: red with the black fuch wheels.
RolexNJ: Deep pockets? Hah! I am a broke graduate student (mainly because we bought a house and I buy too many cars). However, I do see the potential in cars that most buyers miss and I can negotiate like a hawk with private sellers. For instance, I was able to steal the A4 (<$1,000 for a 98.5 w/ 72k miles) away due to it dumping its timing belt. Paid 1/2 of blue book for the bimmer and paid less than $3k for the 951.
I do this mainly to have room to recondition the vehicles. Like with the Audi, I had to have the head redone (replaced all 20 valves), new head gasket, belts, and complimenting supplies. The bimmer was pretty good, but it needed new tires, now brakes, a window regulator, wheel liner, and a couple of other small stuff. The Porsche.... I need fog lenses, fender, nose panel, and power steering hose/rack/or pump (leaks.. A LOT ) but at the price I paid, I can spend $3-4k and have a fine car that I know the work has been done right. The only thing that is irrating is the P-car parts markup! I mean seriously, $320 for fog light lenses? $150 for non-COP plug wires? $100 for a distributor cap? I just hope when people have indy's or dealers service their cars they get some lube with the bill.
After doing some comps, the car should be worth at least $4,500 - $5,500 with its paint polished, interior cleaned, and rattles corrected. The leather seats are in great condition with only slight, and typical, wear on driver's side bolster.
Edit: I got bored and added more

Well, your in a good place to have some fun. The boys to the southwest always have something going on . Columbus is getting active, here in the north east it's a little slower, but watch for postings about a" 944 Fest".Will be the best time you can have with guys of similer interest, 944's/951's/924's.All the front engine water cooled P'cars. If you follow these boards, alot of parts are available from cars that are being parted out. Welcome again and when the weather turns good and our cars are on the streets, a get together would be fun. FRED

Oh, I would love to attend Porsche outings, gatherings, and/or events. I was a member of the local DSM community, but never got to attend most events (studies had to come first). I'll have my MBA in May, so let the good times roll.... Of course, now I'll need a better job to fund the project cars...
So, any deep pockets out there that want to hire a soon-to-be MBA grad? Please let me know; I'm cheap.
