Angry How much is the tach supposed to move when cranking?

As title asks. Just getting chance to tackle the car again for no start. I'm getting about a centimeters worth of bounce on cranking.
Car started fine prior to hg job. Compression reads in between 135-150 across cylinders. Dist cap and rotor new.
Getting spark all the way through plugs and fuel squirts through each injector.

So how much is the tach supposed to bounce?

TIA

Christian

Nobody, eh?

Well, redoing the speed/reference sensor wiring....maybe that'll fix it.

I don't know anymore. This has got to be the most frustrating thing ever.

Crank, crank, crank...that's all it does.

Everything else checks out and it started fine prior to the teardown, so its gotta be something I did.

Mine bounces a few milimeters, not a centimeter. If the you are getting spark, the I don't believe its the reference sensors. Good luck!

I get about a centimeter of bounce.

Your getting fuel? The fuel pump is coming on when you crank? Fuel pressure is good?

Its a bad earth on the engine, had a similar bounce, and i had forgotten to put the earth cables back on the engine.

Mine indicates maybe 50 RPM, which is probably about the rotational speed of the engine under starter power (although I haven't checked this). If it indicates significantly more than what the rotational speed actually is (even during cranking), something's wrong.

Hmm...seems like what I'm getting is right. I replaced the ground with 2 lengths of 4 awg when I did the clutch earlier this year, and they are still good.

The minimal bounce of the tach seems on par with what you all are getting.

Ill have to attack it again tonight and go over every possible thing.

Quick question though, is the sensor bolted to the top of the block supposed to be bolted in the forward hole or the one further back. This is under the intake manifold and basically wedged against the head....say if you tried to slide the head along the top of the block toward the turbo, it would hit this sensor. I have it in the back hole, but don't remember which one it was in prior to removal...

Thanks for all the help

clarks-garage com has a great shop manual section that could help you see where the sensors should go.
