i.e. great cars, but not the best by any stretch of the imagination. it is what it is

I agree
In my opinion, to me, the 951 IS the most beautiful car in the world. Since the moment when I first saw it on tv in a commercial during Wimbledon in November 1985 (I was 13), I was whipped. I have yet to see another car which looks as good from any angle. I was shopping around for a new car in the summer, my wife kept telling me to get something modern, looked at and drove the 350Z, EVO, WRX sti, S2000 to name a few, and even now 20 years later, none of them looked as good or were as much fun to drive as the 951. I think it is the perfect car, beautiful outside and inside, perfect balance and handling, economical 4 cylinder engine, what more could you want this day and age?? I don't have any plans to sell mine anytime soon, regardless of what the wife thinks...

My 951...its the girl next door! I love the 951s but with a few tweeks *cough*968 RS kit w/wing & splitter *cough* I think it is the most beautiful. Just look at the avatar - it defines dead sexy. It took that creation to out do the look of the factory front end with all lights removed/converted to intakes. Even then, I think the factory nose is better.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I don't really find any other cars as cosmetically attractive as the 951 (and needless to say, the performance and build quality are superb too), and like all the best Porsches, its looks are timeless (admittedly with a modern wheel upgrade, that is!).
Here are the only ones which I'd rate "close seconds":
1. The BMW 850csi, in black. Oh yes.
2. Ferrari F355 (NOT the 360 (designed with Saturn's styling gurus?), although the 360 is definitely more fun to drive)
3. Um.....Hmm....Perhaps a 3-way tie between the 928GTS, 968, and a handful of modern Aston Martins
As soon as you factor in performance & quality (Let's ignore value for now, it's external to the car's design anyway), the others fall down. The 850csi is far too heavy to be a true driver's car, the F355 has laughable reliability/build quality, and the Astons suffer from both.
Thus, the 951 is my favourite car, and would be even if its market value were the same as the F355 etc.

I certainly like 944 and 951 styling, but to call it the best of all time is going too far.
Really there are MANY other cars more beautiful than a 944. Some of them are Porsche's many are not.
What I love about the 944 and 951 is performance value. Both cars are great performing cars that are still undervalued in today's market. They are also built in time when styling came second to performace with Porsche. More reciently styling is playing a bigger role and I believe it will make cars that look good now, but do not stand the test of time. One nice thing about the 944 body style is is that it still looks good after 20+ years and also provide so much utility.
As for my favortie looing Porsche... I just have always loved the 904 Carrera GTS. Purposeful, stylish, but not over the top and timeless.

That's why I love the older Ferraris and Porches from motorsports vintage days...the shapes make children giddy, women seduced & grown men teary eyed...and that's before its even started up.
Yes the 951 has good points, a very good example of what a Porsche is about for its time and against its competition when raced in anger - but we cannot discount the landmarks that brought this marque to what it is today.

Number two Renault Alpine
#1 Ferrari Dino 246 GT (I think one of the most beautiful things ever created.)
Although I think the rear flares on the 951 are hot. I turn my rearview in just enough so I can get a peek at it. I also agree the 951 looks great from any angle except from directly behind but maybe I just need to lower the rear a bit.

The beauty
The 951 or 944 turbo as it's known by all others, is the only car with the body of the perfect woman, a figure 8, like Selma Hayek, Halle Berry, etc. It is unique in this manner and it distinguishes it from any other car. When I drive it, I feel like the king of the road cause I am driving a 20 year old car that only a handful of others on the road today can beat or even match for that matter. It is truly a unique piece of machinery and this website would not exist if this was not obvious... this car is truly one of a kind :>
