I'm trying to find tdc to do the timing belts on my 86 951. in clarks garage he mentions finding the letters ot and the timing mark.
As I was trying to find it rotating the crank, what looks like a small allen head screw came around mounted in the flywheel. Is this possibly the mark? and which part do I line it up with? I think I know but just making sure.
TIA
Paul

here is my way: go ahead and remove the distributor cap and the front cam gear cover. roll the engine until the indent on cam gear matches the notch in the back cover - to verify this, go under the car, look for a notch(opening U shaped) in the bell housing to the right of the starter. Look in the opening, you'll see the flywheel and you should see an indented section of the flywheel, about 4mm wide, that should be centered up in the opening in the bell housing. Get that notch centered and your cam gear marks perfect, tdc.
the OT is hard to see in my opinion, I like the flywheel mark and the cam gear marks. If you ever do a clutch job and remove the flywheel, you can paint that indent red and white lines on both sides of it, very easy to see in the future.

Remove spark plug #1
Insert long screw driver
Rotate engine clockwise till cam marks line up
Roate engine clock wise and counter clockwise a few degrees, making sure that the screw driver reaches the highest point matching marks on cam.
Fast, easy and that's the way i do it

The #1 cylinder is the one at the front of the engine...closest to the radiator.
To make your life easier with rotating the engine by hand, take out all 4 spark plugs. This way you dont have to fight compression.
Like everyone else said.. line up the marks on the cam gear with the rear cam gear cover. I used to then look at the notch on the flywheel like Ski said..but recently started to look for the 'OT' mark on the flywheel though the top of the bellhousing. I never really knew where to look until someone showed me.. its much easier than having to crawl under the car!

what angle do you look at the OT - from the top, from the side?
That's why I still prefer to crawl under the car - put the notch in the middle of the opening, then you can lay that timing belt on the cam gear and get it dead on.
