Just have to give a look at the bearings from the differential - the 968's are signficantly bigger than the 944's so may handle more torque.
Shorter ratios help transmitting the torque without applying as much load on the bearings, too.

The 968 tranny fits right on the 944 torque tube.
However you will need the right 968 driveshaft (951 is too short) and the whole 968 gear linkage.
I am currently working out the wiring diagrams to make the speedo work - it's not fun.

My friend Chris at Bauer Porsche in Oakland got my speedo working w/ a 968 trans in a my nonABS 951.
Need to fit a wheel speed sensor and do some rewiring. He said it is easy but requires drilling a hole somewhere in the rear control arm?? Not sure. Look him up in Oakland, nice guy but not a forum junky for sure.
The 968 trans' are getting harder and harder to come by.
They also all had a known preload problem so if you change the LSD unit make sure you get that fixed along the way. I think my locker is 80%, street car, I like it.
I have taken the 968 trans in and out a lot and the shift linkage is essentially the same. The linkage unit that is on the trans istself...rear of the long rod is different....and the set screw/bolt that connects the long rod to it is different (the 968 unit requires a threaded bolt all the way thru the long rod while the 951 is a pointed screw into a dimple)...other than that it is all the same.
I know some guys who put NA 944 trans in their track cars, or maybe it is a S or S2 box not sure, but the ratios are all shorter.
I significantly beefed up the output on my 951 and as I was warned might happen my diff. soon let go and a 968 box was recommended b/c 1 it was designed for torque of 3Ls and 2 the closer gears stop the revs from dropping of and keep you in boost range better.
I'm not a track superstar - but I like it a lot.
