They are much taller giving you more room to work under the car.

I use Naptha for a lot of my cleaning needs.

Varsol works great too and is a little safer.

A pressure washer does WONDERS for cleaning larger components.

Oh!! Almost forgot - Scrubbing Bubbles are the shiznit! Discovered this recently, won't hurt aluminum/plastic/rubber, available at your local friendly grocery - try it!

Does it cut through grease and oily crap pretty readily? Leave any residues or anything if you dont totally wash it all off?

Yes it cuts grease - no it doesn't leave anything behind if you wipe it off.
