air conditioner compressor

air conditioner compressor
I have a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S that needs a air conditioner compressor. I was told by another Porsche owner that this I could use a Toyota compressor instead of a Porsche compressor. He said some of these parts are interchangeable w/Toyota. But, he did not know which model or make of Toyota. Can anyone verify this is true or know of any website where I can find the compressor at a reasonable price?
Thanks

This is the first time I heard this comment before. However, my compressor went out a couple of months ago and I did some shopping around. I tried griffiths, Pelican, Paragon and all were way over $500 - $600. I then tried of all places Autozone website. They have rebuilt un its for $385.00. I tried Kragen online and guess what They have a rebuilt unit for $289.00. I bought the unit from Kragen and it looks exactly like the one out of the car. I've had it on for 2 months so far. BTW it does come with 1 yr warranty.

You can get a new rotary Sanden A/C Compressor from Vertex Auto for $390. I went the rebuilt path but had a bad unit, it was exchanged under warrenty but the second time around R&R costs were rather high. I wanted to recover the R12 and pull a vacumm so I went to a shop...twice.
Here is one on Ebay for $200.

One more thing to note on the compressor purchase from Kragen. They did not require a core charge or return the old one. I did not pay for shipping either. It was $289.00 + tax.
