Heat Wrap crossover???

A timely question, as I currently have my turbo out.
I have seen people wrap their downpipe. Is this a good idea? What is the purpose of wrapping the downpipe since the heat is on it's way out toward the exhaust anyway?

It basically goes like this, hot air moves faster then cold air. As the air cools its density increases, which lowers it's velocity, which makes it spin your turbo slower/need more to spin it faster.
Thermal coating performs the same task as wrapping it, keeping the heat in the air inside the exhaust instead of having it radiate into the exhaust pipes and inturn into the air outside the pipes.

I had my headers/downpipe ceramic coated and I noticed at night after some hard runs the headers would glow but after the coating they do not.
So coating/wrapping certainly makes a difference.
I know someone a while back posted that before and after temps of the radiant heat from the headers after ceramic coating was drop of almost 200 degrees.

NO NO NO....any oil leak you get on the front or top of the motor will run down and soak that wrap. Not only will it then smell like oil burning forever, but if it soaks enough you WILL have a fire. It happened to me, and the leak was so small I had no idea it was there. Had I not had a fire extinguisher the fire could have burned through the fuel line...and that friends would have been ugly. If you want to keep the heat in (good idea) then have it ceramic coated by:

or any of the similar places easily found online. Don't wrap your exhaust in an oil sponge...it's just a bad idea unless you are under the hood inspecting for and quickly fixing any leaks once a week.

Here is a suggestion for you.
I insulated my turbine housing, and downpipe this summer.
And i added a stainless steel heatshield.
Plus insulated the intake manifold.
Seem's to work really good.
Alot less heat on the intake.
Will have to do a test to see the temp diference.
I used this product to wrap it.

There are those turbo blankets out now, that are quite a bit thicker. I've also seen a metal polished cover available for attaching to the hotside. I'm thinking when I get some time/money I might add both. Hmm, now that I think about it, since my car is still refusing to start, might be a good time to take the headers out and have them ceramic coated. I removed the heat shields and wrapped awhile ago, because I didnt have the time then to ship for coating.
