I'm an electronics engineer by trade and I'm looking to see what may be rebuildable on them. I'd use mine but I can't stop driving it long enough to strip it down.

It’s just a 555 timer circuit. Some of the time it is just a solder connections inside the relay going bad. After 20 years of service, it is best to replace the unit.

All circuit boards will go bad, just a matter of time. You have thermal expansion issues, chemical flux oxidizing the connections, dissimilar metals, contact pitting and metal fatigue.
